Cambodia is planning to restore a waterway linking the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port and the deep seaport in the coastal province Kep. It's called the Funan Techo Canal.
The Funan Techo Cannal project is to restore and enlarge the existing inland waterway built in the past and have been left behind. The project will be carried out by Chinese partners under the build-operate-transfer model (BOT), yet has absolutely nothing to do with China’s Belt and Road Initiative. It is 100% initiated by Cambodia. The construction is expected to kick off in August 2024.
The canal is expected to provide numerous benefits, including time and cost savings for travel and transportation, a beneficial irrigation system, flood control, improved livelihoods for locals, and tourism promotion in the country’s southwest region.
