ITA on Enchanted. Amy Adams took a classic archetype, the Disney Princess, and played her completely straight, with nothing tongue in cheek or deconstructive...and yet, in doing so, she made Giselle a complex, flesh-and-blood, three-dimensional human being, with wants and needs and vulnerabilities. She deserved a WIN, for that.

Mark Kermode is spot on here. It took time for Amy Adams to start getting the roles she deserved - she was still doing bit parts on TV in her late 20s - and it's easy to take for granted the intelligence and power she invests, turning potential cartoon fluff like Enchanted into something rewarding, and drawing the audience into Arrival from her first minute on screen. Julianne Moore was in her mid 50s when she finally got a long overdue Oscar. Some artists are so consistently, unobtrusively brilliant that they can be overlooked, and when it happens we should shout about it. Amy Adams should have won Best Actress for Arrival, simple as that. Great post, Mr Kermode.

Probably the best American actress currently working. Love her. Will probably do a Kate Winslet or Al Pacino and wind up winning an Oscar for totally the wrong film.

Spot on with this Mark.
I love Amy Adams work. I first discovered her in a supporting role in Spielberg's excellent Catch Me If You Can and have been a big fan of her ever since.
Julie and Julia is an underrated gem as is Sunshine Cleaning in which she starred alongside Emily Blunt.
So far American Hustle is for me her best performance.
