Me Before You is a 2016 romantic drama film directed by Thea Sharrock in her directorial debut and adapted by English author Jojo Moyes from her 2012 novel of the same name. The film stars Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin, Janet McTeer, Charles Dance and Brendan Coyle.

Set in the United Kingdom, the film was shot in various historic locations across the countries, including Pembroke Castle in Wales and Chenies Manor House in Buckinghamshire, England. Released on 3 June 2016 in the United Kingdom and North America, the film received mixed reviews and grossed $208 million worldwide.

A couple of years back my girlfriend was involved in a horrible traffic accident where for a couple of months she was confined to a wheelchair. She wasn't able to do anything and was even told that she might not be able to walk again ever. When the trailer came out for this movie she was like we need to see this movie. I at first was like no. I hate chick flicks but said ill try to give it a chance. I put her wheelchair on the back of my truck and went to see the movie. As soon as the movie ended we headed to the exits. Once we got to my passenger door i open it and help her get in. I closed her door and then soon as i loaded her wheel chair in the back id stop and just started crying. I started to think of the accident, i thought of her not walking again and just the possibility of losing her forever i couldn't stop to think of the movie. I almost lost her, i was afraid of things to come, of possible surgery going bad...i just couldn't hold it in. So i quickly cleaned my face with my hands and headed to the drivers side. when I got in slowly as my gf turns, she looks at me and puts her hands on my face and wipes the tears and whispers "everything thing is going to be ok". At that moment i felt so much love that i felt like everything well be ok.

The most moving love story ever. From laughter to tears in the blink of an eye! What a powerful way to move feelings! My heart seemed to shrink smaller and smaller until it came out of my mouth, bringing tears to my eyes ... Beautiful movie. Brilliant performances from both actors!

Damn my mom showed me this movie I was crying like a baby. Still feel like I will happily give up my body to save this guy somehow so he and she can live their life together.

He was in physical, medical, emotional agony. Many surgeries. Constant pain. In and out of the hospital nearly dying each time. He told her "I cant live like this". "I just exist". Suicide is a horrible agony. Severe depression is a horrible thing. It's like grief multiplied by 10. No one wants to see their loved ones suffer. As much as I don't believe in assisted suicide. I do understand how someone would get to this point. I've had 2 suicides if friends in the last 2 years. People who.have tortured souls.

Yk, there's honestly a part of me that thinks that in that moment, there was a part of him that wanted to stay alive for her. That he didn't want to lose her and all that she did for him.

But, you can't truly love someone back the way they deserve if you don't love yourself and the life you have first. And sadly, he no longer loved himself, his life, or had the will to keep living it. And even though he told her he believed he could live a good life with her being there for him, he strongly believed it was never gonna be enough to truly make him accept what happened and be able to see past what was ahead of him. His happiness with her wouldn't be able to overpower his pain, suffering, and depression.

And the harsh truth is: you can't strip someone of their free will. Especially when, to them, it's all they feel they truly have left; the thing that they still have control over. And you also, unfortunately, can't hate them for using it the way they choose to. You can hate and disagree with the decision they're making, but in the end, all you can do is love them through thick and thin. No matter how difficult the situation may be or get. Being Christian, of course I was against the characters' decision, cause you should always fight to live, no matter your circumstances. But..I also try to remember the whole "you couldn't understand unless you were in their shoes" thing. And everyone's different. Some people can handle living like this, and some people can't.

Will always knew that Louisa deserved better than that; to not be with someone who you can only make happy to a certain extent, but then after, there's nothing else you can do for them. He didn't want that for her. Nor did he want her to sacrifice her chance at a full, independent life for him, even though I'm sure he loved her for that as well..but he knew how much life there was in the world, and he wanted her to experience it in the ways that he did. It's almost like Jack and Rose in Titanic. In a way, it's kinda similar.

Jack had so much adventure and experience in his life whereas Rose was constantly stuck in the same place, wanting to escape it, even if by death. But their love showed her that she had a lot more going for her and Jack, multiple times, encouraged her to fight for her freedom and her chance to live a full, memorable life. Under her own control. And if you ask me, imo, Jack most likely believed he wasn't gonna survive the wreck before they found the floating door. Imo, it seemed like he never saw a long life or real future ahead of him. He was just a "live day by day" kinda guy; "whatever happens, happens." By then, he didn't even think about himself really, all he cared about was making sure Rose survived. And contrary to popular belief, Jack chose to sacrifice himself in the ocean. I know people love to say they both could've fit, but Jack clearly didn't wanna risk them weighing down the door, so he sacrificed himself..out of love for her.

Anyway, in this case, Will knew that deep down, Louisa longed for adventure, traveling, and a life outside of her bubble/comfort zone. And deep down, she wanted that for herself too. Even though she was willing to give up her dreams if it meant he was still in her life. They both were willing to sacrifice for each other and that's what true love is: putting your loved ones and their best interests before yourself/your own. (Most of the time anyway. Nothing wrong with putting yourself first every now and then.)

Still, in the end:
Lou gave Will peace in his last days.
And Will gave Lou purpose for her days to come. ❤️

I read this novel and right up there with The Fault in Our Stars. Completely horrible both made a 50 year old man demanding who the hell was cutting onions.

I think Jojo should have written it so Lou and Will should have discussed it and come to terms with it early on and not left the inevitable as an emotional end. I agreed with Wills decision but it should have been handled better between the two of them.
