All Airbus? The TAP Air Portugal Fleet In 2022

Portuguese flag carrier TAP Air Portugal is a lot smaller than it used to be. In more recent times, the airline operated a small fleet of Airbus A340-300s but phased out this fleet in 2019.

Decades earlier, TAP had also operated a handful of Boeing 747-200s. But, these days, the TAP Air Portugal mainline fleet is completely comprised of Airbus twinjets, all of which come from both the A320 and the A330neo families. Today, we take a closer look at this airline's fleet.

I got the opportunity to fly in an A321LR neo out of Newark to Lisbon after being rescheduled from a United 787 after missing my United flight due to weather back in June. And I have to say, the lie flat seat was comfortable. Of course, i am still disappointed that i didnt get to experience it on a 787 product, but the cabin was nice nonetheless because TAP seem to have placed emphasis on its seat class that other comparable airlines I have seen reviews of seem to miss. My only complain its that there werent any partitions between seats for added privacy but I was able to get over it. As for the aircraft, I found the reduced noise to be surprising. Overall, TAP has a nice product with this aircraft type flying this type of medium-long haul route that any other airline may assign A330s or A350s to operate.

The A330neo were initially A350 orders, Tap was supposed to be first to fly A350 with SIA I believe.
But the previous CEO, Neelman (current CEO of Jet Blue, I believe), exchange those orders into A330neo and a few more A320 (the LR I believe).

Not sure if it was the best move, but now is done.

Also TAP should be put on sale soon and probably bought by Lufthansa group or IAG (I hope to be the first as it's already part of Star Alliance and it completes better the group, with flights to África and South America) + (if bought by IAG it will just divert many routes to Madrid as the airport there still have plenty of vacants).

A deep dive into the Austrian fleet would be interesting. Some planes of the same type fly different.

I fly with TAP very often to Lisbon from London and it's always a very comfortable plane ride. Thank you for the informative video!

I remember TAP had the option to replace some of its A321LR orders with A321XLR, as the company's strategy shifted aggressively towards the "fly smaller, fly further" motto.

The COVID-19 pandemic put a nail in the coffin of the airline and, despite its continued operation, it has been running in very fragile stilts, having been privatised, nationalised and now privatised again in less than 10 years.

My only flight with TAP was a short 2hr flight...LHR to LIS on an A320-200 in 2015. It was a good experience overall for the short international route (at the time) within the EU.

Portugalia is a fully owned subsidiary of TAP, that’s why they only fly TAP Express services.

I´m from Portugal and I fly a lot of times with TAP. The longest flight I took was from Lisbon to New York and I loved the new plane. Very silent and a good option in my opinion!

I have had the pleasure of flying with them for 26 years, flown in all the current models and can tell you that the new A330neo seats are miles better than the A340 they used to operate

How does an airline route network work? Does an aircraft fly from hub to one destination all the time or does it fly from hub to 1st 2nd and 3rd destination before flying back to hub or does it fly from hub to 1st destination and back to hub before flying to 2nd destination?

I fly TAP frequently, and love them. I like Airbus a320 a lot better than the b737. I fly Norwegian a lot too, in their 737-800

had flown on a TAP A321LR neo, seats were terribly uncomfortable for a trans-Atlantic flight.
