A great way to clean white shoes - Fabric type is to make a wet paste of Dawn and Oxiclean, work in with a brush and rinse well or launder! For leather/vinyl shoes you can use a Magic Eraser! I learned this from someone who resells shoes.

I've also found that soaking oily/greasey things in water with baking soda added to it helps to shift stubborn grease. I'm mainly working with human sweat on, like, bed linens as opposed to lanolin right off the sheep, but I think the principle is the same.
