"One night I snuck into a club and saw this beautiful, beautiful girl singing even more beautiful music. I fell madly and passionately in love with her and I came back every night that she was there. I sit at the back of the club, listened to the music. When the show was over I walk home alone and think about her. This is her song."- ND

LADY-OH (1976 - Age: 35)
NEIL DIAMOND
Album: Beautiful Noise

Lady-oh, Lady-oh
I walked the streets again last night
I saw you in the city light
Like a vision
Lady-oh

Lady I, Lady I
I've been waitin' around
Such a long, long time
Believin' I could make you mine
Just wanting you
Lady-oh

But here I am and there you are
Much too far to even hear me
Hurts a lot
You know it does, it hurts a lot
Oh, Lady-oh
Am I gonna ever learn
What I never learned, before

City lights, city lights
Burn so warm and they burn so bright
But me, I walk the city night
To forget you
Lady-oh

(Saxophone solo)

But here I am and there you are
Much too far to even hear me
Hurts a lot, you know it does, it hurts a lot
Hey, Lady-oh
Am I gonna ever learn
What I never learned before…

Doug's introduction with Neil's voice in the beginning of this video explains a truly compassionate person in Neil as he explains the beauty of the singer in the nightclub but even more importantly 0:15 - "this beautiful beautiful girl singing even more beautiful music" ND
His love for beautiful music drew him to her as his final comment on the introduction was, 0:42 - "This is her song". ND. The impressive night scenes of New York City with the iconic Empire State Building that Doug chose to illustrate during Neil's walk home alone is so fitting in this huge city. 2:44 - "But me, I walk the city night to forget you, Lady - oh." It is amazing how certain visions in Neil's memory can produce such beautiful tempos and lyrics by this master storyteller of feelings to make a available for Doug to complete with his vast array of photos.

I had the pleasure of seeing this compassionate man, and soulful singer, in concert twice. One was at Christmas time. He says he liked candy canes and did anyone have one. Someone in the floor seats sailed one at Neil. Neil sidestepped and so casually said “wow! Let’s not maim the singer”. That stopped everyone from tossing their candy canes in stage. And then he started singing my favorite song of his, Lady Magdalene.

What a beautiful introduction and even as he talks about that experience there’s a passion and heartfelt emotion locked up inside of him … to walk home each night alone afterwards….

A truly beautiful song from a truly outstanding album, Beautiful Noise. I fell in love with the song from the very first time I heard Robbie Robertson's guitar intro. One of the best songs from one of my all-time favorite albums.
