TP-Link Omada June 2024 Overview

TP-Link Omada is a software defined network platform (everything managed from a single pane of glass). It's still useful in 2024 -- and even though my hardware doesn't support the latest features -- it still supports a lot and TP-Link is adding new features all the time!

I must say, after me doing my CRAP video on the ER7212, they fixed the issue with firewall rules pretty quickly so they gained my respect !

I bought mine some 2 years ago and it is the best system for my house. Have around 32 users/access to the internet. Give me instant view and notification when the Gateway goes down and logs any anomalies. My view it is enterprise quality but a lot cheaper.

Another great vid Willie, this controller software reminds me looks like a combination of Unifi and Grandstream, made me chuckle as I have just been doing some Grandstream vids on my channel.

Just to be clear I am not criticising any of them as I guess it makes sense looking familiar in some ways so users can easily change over to other providers whilst being easy to setup between one another which makes changing more inviting knowing you are going to find setting up first time to not be like a minefield.

Keep those great vids coming😊 looking forward to the next ISP setup video in the series 😊

Thanks for the vid, I have an upcoming small project (about 5 AP's) and thinking about going with Omada, I don't need anything special but Ubiquiti AP's are almost double the price of the omada equivalent..

Thanks for this high-level look and the management tools for larger networks. I'm manualy "managing" an ER7206 at home and the only things missing for a home network is a local DNS & wireless. I have my dusty old Linksys pulling DNS & access point duty for now until I come up with something more slick.

Thanks for doing this! I have been hearing that Omada is a great alternative to Unifi but I have been hesitant to recommend the hardware to people asking for home network overhauls because I have no experience with the controller and setup and didn't want to risk learning on the job and finding out something wasn't going to work. Being able to see everything from the get go on how to set up a new network with typical hardware was a huge help. I feel pretty confident in this hardware and setup now so it is a potential option I would be comfortable with, though to be honest the interface is very similar to Unifi with a bit of pfsense feel mixed in, and the pricing is nearly the same between Omada and Unifi comparable hardware too. So I still think I lean towards unifi when this doesn't really have a pricing advantage.

Just into the first few months of using Omada switches and AP's so far much better than my old wireless setup. Not yet changed my ageing dual wan router, I'd like to hear what you have to say about them.

I went from using an EdgeRouter Lite 3 for my dual WAN to a TP-Link ER605 mainly because the TP-Link has a much nicer GUI

Can you explain Port forwarding for TP-Link Omada controller? It is like this, from ER605 as sub headquarters to OC200 as main headquarters. The sub headquarters is a remote location in another ISP provider.

Thanks for the walkthrough - a comparison of Omada 2024 vs Unifi would be be interesting..

if I already do my routing via a Firewalla Gold SE, is it beneficial to still get the Omada controller to control/manage my access points more granularly?

Much better than I expected, closer to fortinet than unifi if you ask me.

Thanks for the walkthrough, can you please do a video on how to use automation scripts (in any language) to control TPLink routers. Thanks!

I have it and works super, the only thing is that they need to add firewall rules

Just a warning.. the 3 in 1 router controller only supports 2 switches and 5 aps max. I found out the hard way.

Hi - I am seventy, can you personally or via Omaha create a default for differing level of users
Typically :
A very simple home network do this or that…
A small home network and business - with an advanced options menus
A small business network, a step up from the home and small business
And; so on varying levels of application and use
