Learning about priates and privateers makes me wonder, why did merchant ships usually travel alone instead of in convoys and pool money together for a warship to protect them

From what I read the state of Algiers was the most powerful of the Barbary coast and it was them who sent Corsairs to raid Baltimore and Iceland and in 1827 Algerian navy participate in the battle of navarin helping the ottomans and in that war most of its navy got destroyed and the French took advantage of this and invaded algeria in 1830 thus putting an end to the Barbary dominance of the Mediterranean and soon after Algiers fell other states like Tunis and Tripoli suffered the same fate
