Rote Learning Messed Me Up As An Adult

Remember when all you needed to do was mug everything up and just throw it on to the exam paper to top the class? Well, that really doesn't equip people enough for the real world. Our entire educational system needs an overhaul and it's time we talk about it.

I remember when I was in 11th standard.. my biology teacher tried to go interactive- yeah pop quizzes, discussion..All those.. this actually got everyone to try and learn but a bunch of *"mugging up and top rank people"* said these were useless for them and they needed NOTES.. eventually they complained to principal about her alien techniques of teaching... And our teacher was changed.
This system is something we have become slaves of.. and especially to mugging up experts will do everything to keep the same.. :/

as a current 10th grader I am literally so done. there is little to no kinesthetic learning, limited to vague lab activities with teachers just rushing to JUST FINISH THE PORTIONS and MEET DEADLINES for test after test with PE Periods, Yoga Library etc. being taken away to complete portions. hey after all, "only marks matter". they cancelled most events and trips . meanwhile probably none of us know how to do taxes, deal with mental and emotional issues and have no idea what we wanna do after 10th.

Being a psychologist, I totally agree to what is being shown. The foundational skill required is the skill to pay attention with intention and compassion.

All the visual and project work still happen in many schools, but the worst part is that you still have to mug information to answer questions, especially when the subjects are those like social science.

My son was not good in 'mugging ' or as u say ratna...thus he got average marks, but he was always good in practicals, projects and assignments. Somehow completed Btech in India with average grade and went on to do masters in USA .. thus topping his class there and also to become a temp teacher !! Style of education was toatally diff there.

When I migrated from India to the US (around 6th grade), I was so confused in the beginning. In India I was used to the teachers telling us point-by-point what to do; what the question/answers will be; what to memorize; etc. In the US, teachers gave us directions and expected us to use our logic + learning and come up with an answer. In the US we were given creative freedom. I remember it being hard for me to adjust to actually applying what I had learnt to come up with solutions. I don't think I completely got over this hurdle, but the kids around me had an easier time. Outside school life requires you to use what you know and be innovative. Innovation is the future, not memorization.

I'm not saying that the US education system is perfect (not by a long shot). I'm also not claiming that the Indian education system doesn't produce scholars or intellectuals. However, India has a long way to go in terms of education. There is so much pressure on kids these days, only to shove as much information as possible in their heads. Not to be individuals who are expected to contribute something new to the world.

This video is heart touching
I m really pissed by our education system in in class 9 i m a topper but i never cramp things i always want to grasp knowledge weather it is in our syllabus . We have sanskrit as an extra language n i m worst at that n i have seen many other toppers (except me i hardly score 50% in it ) they just cramp the whole book and in exam they dont know what the question mean they dont know what the answer means but they score 97 out of 100 i felt so good by seeing this vedio n our education system needs to be change soon

Indian schools just transformed into just factory/company who want to just show their good products (students) no matter how 😠

I think this series is making an impact, atleast for me, because thats what social media is supposed to do. Make you feel culturally aware and socially responsible. Can you make an episode for fake whatsapp news, norms to use whatsapp or how India is faring in hunger and poverty reports or taxes ?

Things have changed a little though....I went to a CBSE school in Rajasthan. (Graduated this year) and we did have group discussions and debates in class quite frequently. The problem was that they never contributed to our grades. When it came down to evaluating performance, our marks in exams were all that mattered.

It doesn't matter as to what you say, people are gonna see this video and then forget it the next day. The only way you can make a difference is by changing the mentality of teachers, institutions and specifically parents, because there so any people I know that study for the sake of their parents. Even I'm one of them. And it's so damn frustrating when you try to explain this to your parents and they just dismiss your opinion. I know they do what they do for us and only us, but they really do need to understand that by pressurizing their kid to mug up some (Even maths. I mean how can you mug maths. What even is the point.) Q and A the kid is not going to be able to do anything in life.

P.S-: I know it's a long comment. But this is a gravely important issue.
