I grew up in Vancouver but moved to Belfast when I was 15. Back in Canada I used to catch my mother listening to songs about home and tearing up. Ive lived here for 30 years and I just turned into her. Thanks ya bastards :p

He did this for the first time ever at the opera house, on stage by himself, it wasn’t even properly finished yet, but it was a special moment and he wanted to sing it there. His voice was so powerful and emotional you could have heard a pin drop. It was like we weren’t even there, and his eyes were closed. His voice broke slightly in the final words and then the whole place erupted, all the Irish in the house had a namaste moment it was beautiful.

I spent most of my teenage years getting the train up to Belfast with my friends, merely to just roam the streets, window shop and get food. It was the highlight of my week, every week.
Sadly no trips to Derry, instead my Nan used to bring us to the caravan in Cranfield, she had an endless amount of toys, trips to Kilkeel for the pound shops and days on the beach. I miss her a lot.
This song sits so close to my heart, those trips to Cavan every year to spend time in the cabins by the lough (I grew up beside Lough Neagh, but it had eels, not crawfish and pike!), with my cousins and our family and pets, spending the days fishing or walking through nature. They all just come flooding back and it's a warm feeling of happy nostalgia and sadness. It's beautiful.
