A wildfire that has burned about 8,000 acres near the city of Vantage was about 10% contained as of Tuesday morning, officials said.

This happens every few years, the fire burns up all the old grass that grows better after each fire. As long as they can keep it from buildings and the forrests, they need to let it burn. Realistically, they should do control burns every year to keep it from getting out of control like this.

The Vantage area only gets a few inches of rain annually. Every summer is plenty dry enough for wildfires. What matters is the amount of fuel available. Wet years provide more vegetative growth thus more fire fuel.
