New York City has a skyscraper without any windows. This building, resembling something out of a dystopian film, stands at 33 Thomas Street and the reason for the complete lack of windows has to do with Soviet Union.
The AT&T Long Lines Building, towering at 170 meters 550 feet , is a remarkable example of Brutalist architecture. It was specifically designed without windows to house long-distance radio equipment, giving it its imposing and unique appearance. Built during the Cold War, the structure was intended to protect vital equipment from external threats, including nuclear strikes. The building could operate autonomously for up to two weeks in the event of a disaster. Its solid, windowless form, made of pre-cast concrete panels, also shielded against electronic eavesdropping and espionage, which was crucial during that era. The building’s mysterious and creepy design has fueled urban legends and conspiracy theories, making it a significant part of New York’s history.
