Got a confident young rider in your family that’s keen to learn cool tricks? In this video, our woom instructor Tim will show your child how to pull the ultimate wheelie. Being able to lift your front wheel is a really useful skill to get over obstacles, like roots and branches or to get onto a sidewalk.
Watch the video first, then have a go! Learning by doing is the best way here, so go easy on parental input. It's no secret that kids learn from watching others.

🦺 Safety first!
Just like on any regular bike ride, thinking about protection is a must when practicing tricks. Wearing gloves is very sensible and having a properly-fitting helmet is vital. To be extra safe, knee and elbow protectors are a good idea.

What's more, your bike needs a thorough safety check before every ride. Think: bolts, brakes and air!
- Are all the bolts and, where applicable, quick-releases done up tightly?
- Check the brakes by pulling on both brake levers in turn to see if you can feel resistance. Does the wheel stop spinning?
- Check the tires and wheels are in good condition and don't have anything stuck to them. If air is needed, pump them up.

🌳 🚲 Practical guidelines
1. Pick a location where you can practice safely that's free of traffic and other dangers. A very moderate incline will be beneficial. Some natural uphill resistance will make it easier.
2. Have a slightly lowered saddle. In the case of most kids, the saddle is usually fairly low, so it may not need changing.
3. Get your child to start in an easy gear – 2nd or 3rd would be best so that they don't have to push down too hard on the pedals.

👣 Quick step-by-step guide for your child
1. Select an easy gear.
2. Bend your arms and lower your upper body towards the bars.
3. At the same time as a hard pedal stroke, lift the front wheel by straightening your arms and raising your upper body.
3. As soon as the front wheel is in the air, shift your weight over the rear hub and continue to pedal for as long as possible. (To begin with, it can be tricky to keep balance and hold the wheel in the air for anything longer than a few pedal strokes.)

💨 How fast should your child be riding?
The speed can vary. It's easier to get the front wheel up if your child is starting from a slower speed. However, keeping their balance is easier at a higher speed.

👉 Expert tips
- Your child should keep their eyes focused relatively far in front of them to their balance.
- Controlled dismount: If the front wheel goes too high and your child loops out, they should jump off the back of the bike by taking their feet off the pedals and landing on the ground.
- Cover the rear brake: Your child can learn how to modulate the rear brake when they feel that the front wheel is coming too high. This will cause the front wheel to drop.
- Your child can use their knees to prevent tipping over to the sides.
