Nice review! I have this device and would like to inform you that it works great with my Samsung S8 plus connected via an OTG cable. The phone recognizes the dac and with the USB Audio Player Pro you get gorgeous hi-res music to your headphones. It's a very portable solution for on the go quality listening!

I’m with you on the volume control. I often use a portable dac/amp when using headphones with my iPad, even lying on the couch. Not so much for SQ (although my 650s do sound better), more the convenience of having an analog volume pot within easy reach. Nothing worse than perforating your eardrums as you click around various media and stumble across something stupid loud.

I would really like to hear your opinion on the Fiio K1 and SMSL X4. Both are flash drive size like this Audio Engine one but they only cost $40.

Everywhere else has recommended AudioQuest Dragonfly series. Why not you? Is bogus with paid lobbyist hype? I’m trying to make an entry level purchase for stream only YouTube/Pandora/etc. I like the idea of a USB DAC/AMP?PREAMP stick that can run up to 50-60 Ohm headphones. Other than that only experience is with LG V20 with it’s built in DAC and some bottom of line Monoprice I near Ms.

Would you use this as a dac only and pair it with a separate amp? The goal being external volume control and more power for harder to drive headphones. If so, would an O2 or Magni 3 work out well?

another negative is Audioengine does not provide a cover for this DAC male end when not in use and stored. amazing its not hard. I dont like my stuff being damaged or out in the open where a insect can crawl in.
