Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury experienced a humbling defeat as they were swept in their season series by Caitlin Clark's Indiana Fever. This result is particularly striking, given that Taurasi had earlier cautioned against underestimating the challenges awaiting rookies like Clark in the WNBA.

Returning from the Olympic break, where she did not participate with Team USA, Clark took the opportunity to shine. She spearheaded the Fever to a 98-89 victory over the Mercury, their third win against Phoenix this season. Clark's stellar performance included 29 points, 10 assists and five rebounds.

On the other side, Taurasi seemed to be struggling to regain her form after recently returning from the Paris Games. With minimal time to readjust, she ended the game with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three turnovers.

Adding to her frustrations, she was hit with a technical foul early in the game after a dispute with officials over a call against Brittney Griner.

The win was particularly satisfying for Clark, especially in light of a social media jab from the Mercury's team just days before the game.

The team had posted a video of a young fan holding a sign saying, "Who is Caitlin? I'm here for Taurasi," along with clips of Taurasi making impressive three-pointers.

Sceptical about the rookies

Clark's rapid impact in the WNBA contrasts sharply with Taurasi's earlier predictions of a tough transition for rookies like her.

Following Iowa's deep run in the NCAA women's basketball tournament, Taurasi had commented to ESPN's Scott Van Pelt that the incoming class, including Clark, Kamilla Cardoso, Angel Reese, and Cameron Brink, would face significant challenges in the professional league.

"You know, there's levels to this thing. And that's just life. We all went through it," Taurasi said. "And you see it on the NBA side, and you're going to see it on this side, where, you know, you look superhuman playing against 18-year-olds, but you're going to come with some grown women that have been playing professional basketball for a long time.

"Not saying that it's not going to translate, because when you're great at what you do, you're just going to get better. But there is going to be a transition period where you're going to have to give yourself some grace as a rookie, and, you know, it might take a little bit longer for some people."

In a world of me me me Caitlin is always giving her team the credit for their wins . It’s truly refreshing😅

She deserves the criticism/ not hate for 2 reasons, (1) Reece’s touch around the basket, is kin to a person with 10 thumbs (2) she talk trash like her game is on par with Caitlin Clark, not even close 🤷🏽‍♂️ respectfully

The only reason that Angel Reese wound up with so many people disgusted with her and hating her is because she was so blinking nasty towards Caitlin Clark, even to the point of cheering when another player knocked to the ground. If Reese had shown sportsmanship from the beginning instead of being, a “meangirl”she wouldn’t have people hating her. I actually feel sorry for her because she blew it big time with that and made herself out to be the villain. She chose that role and it’s the only reason she’s gotten any more attention than any other player.

Angel is not committed to getting better. Instead of being in Paris, she should be working on her game. That's what makes Catlin Clark so great. She had 2 weeks of doing that.

We just want the TRUTH! When someone rides an insignificant double-double PADDED streak to lie to basketball fans, this is INSULTING the fans! Showing the TRUTH is NOT hate. You LIE to fans you, WILlL be CALLED-OUT!

0:50 Here's the thing people are not really talking about CC. Her IQ is off the chart and how unselfish she was at the end of the game. It was about winning and NOT STATS and she showed it when she dribbled out instead of taking that easy layup. Taking time off the clock was more important than scoring two more points!

Angel Reese is the greatest rebounder of her own misses in WNBA history

Rookie of the year goes to Caitlin Clark 🎉

Thanks for exposing why Reese should never ever have been in the ROTY

And then there's these facts.

Angel Reese has had her shot rejected 59 times in 25 games with 15 games left, the record was previously held by Natalie Williams who had her shot rejected 53 times in 34 games. I cannot narrow down the exact year this record was set, but Natalie played in the WNBA from 1999 to 2005. This was updated from 54 rejections before the all-star break to include Angel’s 5 rejected shots against the Mercury on 8-15-2024

I don't think people hate AR, they hate people busting on CC while praising AR. AR is a bull, and CC is an artist.

Dude she has been #2 in vegas odds for a minute. CC is by far more valuable and a better player than Aja I shot from 5 feet Wilson. Aja is fed the ball CC has to fight for it.

It's not hate, Reese is just not a good player. I've seen high school girls play better than her. It's just reality. That eight minute clip shows who she really is. She's not a finisher, her double double streak was full of stat padding, helped by her coaches, and, refs, and opponents! It's cheating. At least every record Clark gets, she earned!

I'm not sure Reese is growing the game; its all in the attendance numbers, which are still average for the Sky.

Until the Media whipped up the Angel Vs Catlin story line; nobody gave 1/2 a shit about double doubles.

Her record streak is an accomplishment 👏 but It's a being hyped bc Catlin is head n shoulders above all the other rookies.

It's actually unfair to Angel to use her, in this manor.

Who would you build a team around Caitlin or Angel ?

The answer is obvious and so is the ROTY if nothing changes drastically.

They are NOT both great players. CameronBrink, Rickea Jackson and Aliyah Edwards are all better and more skilled than Reese.

I Hope Somehow They Keep Mitchell, She’s A Vital Part To The Fever. Some People Ask Who Is The Better Of The Two, Neither. Clark’s Not A Catch and Shoot Player and/or Cannot Run The Floor Like Mitchell. Mitchell Cannot Run The Offense The Way CC Does, They Are Both Very Valuable To There Team.

Making an 8 minute video is not hate. Making it an hour long would be. It was actually nice of him to keep it at 8 minutes. And I find it annoying as hell when someone just points out straight stats, like shooting 13%, people says it's hate. When someone says Clark is averaging 5 turnovers a game, I say Yep that's true, and I offer a reason with detailed analysis as to why she has turnovers, not just say you hatin'.
