I’m a black American and I just found out Yoruba is the largest percentage of my heritage. I definitely need to learn this language since this was stripped from us during the Trans Atlantic slave era.

learning African languages could be enjoyable because they reveal so much about ancient language mechanisms.

My fiance is Yoruba. We are getting married in a few months. I want my husband to be able to speak his own language in his own house and not have to speak English all the time. I've been using Memrise for a few months. You should see his face when I slip Yoruba words into conversation. He feels so loved. 🥰❤️

The time of my Dad dissing me and my siblings is coming to an end. We have just really started paying attention to his side comments in Yoruba and have realized that they haven't exactly been kid friendly. Can't wait to see his face when I reply.

I cheated, since my parents were too busy to teach me Yoruba, I made it a point of duty and a promise to myself to date only Yoruba girls/women from the age of 17. I am now married to a beautiful Yoruba woman whose first tongue is Yoruba for 9 years.

Our first rule was to always speak Yoruba at home. Very steep learning curve but within 2 years I now speak Yoruba, ok, not fluently, not eloquently because of the westernized tongue but I can't be mugged off with the language anymore. Our two kids now understand and speak Yoruba, yes with English accent, but it's ok, it's better than nothing.

For the newbies, don't be discouraged by the mockery or piss taking by the fluent Yoruba speakers. Relatives are the worst, they laughed and mock my attempts. They'll tend to roll over laughing because of the accent, roll with it, it's all love. You'll eventually get there.
