I never really thought of sketchbooks as a medium for learning until now. Thanks for opening my mind

I don't have a sketch book yet, but I can see the value. I will be shopping for one soon. I vote for Missy the Misfit Bunny.

Oh my! My sketchbooks are filled with unfinished human poses and koi fishes in varying degrees of contortion. Thankyou so much for this video, you made me look at it from a new angle. Much love

My favorite thing to draw is messy figure studies and I like focusing on specific parts.... feet, mouths, shoulders... etc.

Also, we should bane the bubby Pookie!

I like to draw the objects that are around me whether at home or in a shopping centre. Some things cry out to be drawn. I try to make them happy and feel included.
So glad to have discovered H2O colour misfit...thank you

I tend to draw more from life... so my preferred subjects are landscape, specific tree studies, leaves, and flowers. Iris, daffodil, calla lilies... any big interesting flower. I like to use good results to send as cards to family and friends.

My sketchbook is used for drawing, experimenting, scrapbooking but it probably has more journal/gratitude/prayer entries. I love my sketchbook it’s where I center myself and my life. It’s an extension of me.❤️😊

How about Lucas for the bunny? (the name Lucas generally means 'light giving' or 'bright').

I like these tips for the sketchbook. (Enjoyed Stephen's cameo appearance!) I'm trying to keep my sketchbook/journal looser and less 'precious'. Not every page is going to be a gem but will at least be a creative exercise!

This series is amazing! AND...the fact that you are just a one state over from me makes me feel like we are true neighbors! How awesome! This video was just for me because I have so many sketchbooks and notebooks where I was trying to make them look cute and for journaling or art journaling and it wasn't long before I lost inspiration due to perfectionism and overthinking and definitely self comparison with other artists. This is something, through Christ, that I am in constant training to break myself from. It's SO HARD...but, I know I will get there one day! I just need to learn to be patient with my work, my style, and how I see things. So, one of my most favorite things to draw are super cute things! Be it food, bunnies, or video games, I just love to doodle and paint them!

Love the idea of thumbnails. Just doodle possible compositions for future paintings. No pressure and I just might hit on something I like! I have 2 new sketchbooks I haven’t touched yet. Time to break them out!!
Actually, I often have no idea what to do so I bought one sketchbook thinking I would challenge myself to practice by making an alphabet book. Page 1, draw or paint an object that starts with A, like an apple. Page 2, something that begins with B, like a ball, banana, or hey, how about a Bunny!! BTW, the first name that popped out of my head for your Bunny was Bobbie. ... Then came Bubbles, Bubba, and Beanie. My brain rambles in mysterious ways. Ha!!
Thanks so much for your videos. I learn so much from you, and y’all are darling!!! You ROCK!!

I'm starting to use watercolor and I'm really loving your channel. The blank paper really freaks me out, but as I watched your videos (I've watched everyone in this series for beginners since yesterday) the urge to paint has been growing. I loved the tips to start a sketchbook! Thank you!

Omg, that transfer method is blowing my mind! I've always been overly fond of those random sketches on undesirable school notes or random printer paper but would sadly just move on from them. I just recently learned about transferring with graphite exactly like the technique you showed but not once did this come to mind until I saw your video. Thank you so much, this video was chalk full of awesome tips!

The bunny animation was terrific! I like Claude, too for the bunny. I just started my first sketchbook in decades. So far, it only has line control exercises. It was the least intimidating way I could think of to start.

I like to draw whatever I'm struggling with or new to as well as throw in some simple refined sketches of things I know I draw really well. It keeps filling it challenging but with space to relax and decompress. Also color swatches or just pages I basically ruin by messing around with my paints without thinking about the final outcome - this one is a good technique for me to explore brush work and various basics with whatever paint I'm using and make those basics my own.

I know this is from years ago but I want to share what helped me, in case any future viewer can relate-

I finished my first sketchbook in February after nearly 20 years of ditching sketchbooks for various non-reasons.

For me, the biggest start was participating in Figuary both in 2021 and this year. Not only did I get started with daily drawing, but showed myself that I can finish an art challenge. I’ve been a “non-finisher” my whole life, so it’s switched my mindset a lot. Daily practice helps too, you fill em up faster that way so if you find a new one you really want to use it’s less hard to finish the one you’re on (for me at least).

My favorite “reason” for tossing mostly unused sketchbooks was me tearing out too many pages, so I also have a no tearing rule. I’d do something I’ve decided is too ugly to be seen again and just destroy any evidence of it 😂 But it’s a sketchbook, not a portfolio, this is where we’re supposed to make mistakes and “bad” art. Plus, you need to see where you need improvement if you want to get better anyways! I like to remind myself how cool it’ll be to compare art gone wrong to my work in a few years too - sure it makes me cringe seeing it now, but seeing the difference in progress is so motivating!

Lastly, getting diagnosed with and treatment for my ADHD last year has helped too. That impatience and impulsivity has plagued my ability to finish things forever! Of course, this isn’t an option for everyone but I figured I’d mention it in case anyone needs a reminder to treat whatever that gets in their way. I’m so much less hard on myself in general because I did seek treatment and I accept my mistakes with far less emotional attachment than before. I used to throw my hands up and not draw for several months (years, on a couple of occasions!) and that’s stunted my growth both as an artist and as a person in general.

tldr;
-Completely an art challenge, ideally one where you’re just using reference so you don’t have to be ‘inspired’
-Understand why you’ve left unfinished sketchbooks and push back when you notice it starting to happen again
-Don’t ignore any medical (including mental) problems in the way of you regularly using it. if you can get proper treatment, do it; if not, search for advice from others like you online.
