I was just wondering the other day, are we missing historical context for certain things because we don’t understand the neologisms of past societies? Have we misinterpreted stuff because we don’t know ancient memes? Like imagine if a future civilization found records of us saying things like “the panini was a weird time, I shaved my head and learned macramé”. That sentence would make no sense to someone who doesn’t know the memes about doing random things during lockdown and using other p words in place of “pandemic”. Anyone who read that without context would probably be baffled as to what a type of sandwich has to do with hairstyles and hobbies.

I feel like we don’t really think about it because we tend to have this assumption that past generations were always serious and proper and perfectly academic, but let’s be real, memes are not actually a new thing. We didn’t just evolve the ability to access humor within the last century and the concept of widespread cultural references or inside jokes didn’t just spring from the forehead of the internet like Athena.

You can feel how much the painter adores their child in this artwork

You KNOW he had to paint his daughter because she was too cute.

Her being attentive during first sermon and dozing off later is relatable 😂❤

An enchanted adorable way to start the day...and finish it too. She tried hard, the lessons just weighed down her little head. For sharing your keen eye, and sharp ear thank you Ms. Mae ✨

At the end of it all, beyond her proper posture and excellent behavior, she’s still just a wee lass in need of a nap. 🥹💕 Such a darling set of paintings. ❤❤❤❤

Love that her likeness was captured so beautifully. It makes you wonder what kind of a life she had and if she had a family, husband, kids, grandkids....

Victorians get a rep for being stuffy and overconservative, bit the opposite was true. They were a people deeply interested in life, love, and expression. It was an age of exploration and expression where new ideas were created, challenged, and enshrined.

Childhood was novel and revolutionary idea born of the Victorian Era. The idea that children were special innocent beings to be treasured rather than just adults small enough to fit between gears

Victorians were ALL ABOUT memes, if you had your witty sayings and references down then you were not only the top of social gatherings, you were someone the powerful would offer positions to- because back then it was entirely driven by nepotism and pleasing the people above and around you, unlike today…

But seriously, it’d be like if today you became the CEO of Microsoft because you were mildly competent at office work and had the entirety of The Simpsons memorized and you could get Robert Downey Jr to show up at the parties people threw
