What is a Triquetra?

The triquetra is a historic symbol that has appeared in numerous cultures. The word "triquetra" is derived from the Latin for "three-cornered," and the actual symbol is composed of three equal-sized interlocking loops or arcs. Many people see this as three leaves entwined together.

The Celts used the triquetra as a representation of their triple goddess, a divinity who stood for the three stages of life—maiden, mother, and crone—in one of the triquetra's oldest recorded use. The three elements of earth, air, and water as well as the three spheres of existence—earth, sea, and sky—were also represented by the triquetra.

Fans of the television show, Charmed, the original version, will recognize the triquetra as the symbol found on their book of shadows symbolizing the magical power of three.

The triquetra has been used in Christianity as a representation of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, or the Holy Trinity. It was frequently portrayed as a triangular knot, with each loop standing for a different part of the Trinity. It was once the symbol used on the cover of the Gideon Bible.

The three realms of existence were represented by the sign in Norse mythology as well. The triquetra was also a representation of the deity of magic and wisdom, Odin.

The triquetra's beginnings are still somewhat mysterious despite its widespread use. Though its precise roots are still unknown, it is thought that the symbol may have originated in the Mediterranean region.

The triquetra is still employed as a representation of a variety of ideas today, such as connectivity, oneness, and balance. It is a common tattoo design and is frequently utilized in jewelry and other ornamental objects.
