What is Amniotic Band Syndrome?

During pregnancy, the amniotic sac surrounds a fetus and provides protection. This fluid-filled membrane provides a cushion so a fetus can continue developing safely. In rare cases, strands of the sac separate from the lining and begin to create a threat.

Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) occurs when the baby gets entangled in these bands. As the baby grows and develops, the bands tighten and restrict blood flow to the body.

ABS can be diagnosed earlier through advanced ultrasound techniques. In utero surgery can free the baby’s limbs from amniotic bands.

In 1985 when I was pregnant, I begged my doctor to do an ultrasound because I felt something was not right.
My doctor said you’re a completely healthy young lady we do not need to do an ultrasound unless we feel we have to.
My daughter was born with a very rare amniotic band and clubbed foot that is in medical history books.

I wish my doctor would’ve listen to me. 😢
