iPad Productivity: How I Use Things 3 Everyday

Things 3 is a newish task manger for iOS. I’ve been a long lover of Todoist but recently I just switched over to Things. I’m really loving this application, so let’s jump into it.

One suggestion. Instead of using WorkFlow to create a project template, you can do this faster (no back and forth) by creating an Area called templates and have your project template already created there. Then just use duplicate, to create a new copy which you drag to another Area and rename and customize it to your liking.

Hey Chris, great video! I've been using Things 3 since launch and still learned a lot from your video.
You mentioned you don't use the Anytime section for much. The idea behind Anytime is that anything that shows up is ready to be worked on. It's where you would pull tasks from to put into Today or Upcoming when you're looking ahead at your week.
As you probably know, Things is designed around a philosophy that borrows heavily from Getting Things Done. If you haven't given the book a read already, it could very well have a profound impact on your relationship with Things 3.
And now I have some Workflows to write. Thanks again for the video!

Things, Agenda, Bear, Workflow, Notability, Drafts, ... just productivity apps alone will keep me in the Apple eco system! Amazing stuff! When I had Windows at work, I really struggled looking for great productivity software that works across all platforms, whereas in the Apple eco system there are so many beautiful and functional apps! People be talking about features, customization and voice assistants while great apps are so much more important and actually make a difference when working and being creative and productive! Not just do those apps offer the features I need, but they also are beautifully designed, sync reliably and are fun to use. As you said, those apps often feel special. The Apple eco system is something truly unique and Apple keeps pushing the developers and offering them great tools.

Great presentation, I love your honesty and your clarity in your videos.
I’ve been using Things 3 for a few weeks now, and I’d like to add that the Apple Watch app is great too, especially the complication that let you see the next 3 items to do. I bought it for this at first, and it’s helping me a lot getting things done everyday.
You said in your video that you don’t open the app when adding a task not to be overwhelmed by what’s coming, so I guess you wouldn’t using that complication, but for those like myself who get lazy at what to do next, it’s a great reminder and an additional motivation to clear out tasks.

I downloaded the iPhone version earlier this week but have been procrastinating on learning and using it. Your video was helpful and insightful. Thanks!

Totally know what you mean about Mac apps feeling special. The third party apps are one of the main reasons I choose to use a Mac.

Things pairs well and I believe is designed with some of the methods described in David Allen’s “Getting Things Done.” I have been using it on and off for almost 8 years and try others and always go back to it. Recently I’ve taken on a different role that’s very complicated with lots of people and work streams. I actually just ordered an IPad Pro to work in Things 3. Liked the video as most of my experience is with Things on my phone. Very helpful.

Thank you for your shortcuts Chris! I keep them as a sample for other projects in Things

Hey Chris, Thanks for listening! I posted a wish for a Things deep dive a few weeks ago. I have the original Things but never really got into it. This video is a great overview. It looks like there is much more functionality and you made it easy to understand how to navigate. Thinking I will upgrade now. Really appreciate how clear and easy to follow your videos are. I can do so much more on my iPadPro now and it has changed the way I work across my devices. Thanks!

I use things, but I'm not an expert in it. I just find it easy to use the basic to do functions and I'm sure there are useful functions i'm missing. Waiting for your things updates, until then I'm exploring on my own.

You mentioned liking the fact that the to-do list of things is not on your screen all the time. I am the opposite - I would find that quite helpful. Is that an option? I'd like to just keep my to-do/project lists up on my desktop at all times.

I love Things 3. Had Things for years without using it much, then by intertia I got Things 3 upon release, but I still didn't start using it, until I did. Now we're inseparable.

This was very helpful. I was hoping to see where you figured out a capability for “pop up” reminders. I started using this app last week and forgot things because I didn’t have a notification to remind me. I hope they add this feature in the future.

At the start of the video you seem a bit vague about exactly how long it is that you’ve been using your new task manager.
Probably something worth pondering man

Why do you prefer this over Todoist? I’m trying to decide between the two. TIA!

I see that there are 2 different things apps, which one should I get so I can use both on my iPhone and my iPad pro

Great review. I suppose for a person that has a great deal to do every day this would be a terrific app but for me $19.95 is awfully expensive. Still I do like all the features it has to offer. If I had need of them I suppose I would be willing to spend the money. I very much enjoy your reviews.
