GED Math on a TRUCK!?! The CRUCIAL Difference Between Simplifying and Solving

Two GED students, Brandon and Nat, contacted me today confused about the same concept, though they didn't realize it. Brandon was stumped by a math problem he found on the side of a truck of all places and Nat was digging deep into a GED Math lesson on the Crash Course but the root of their struggle was the same! And they aren't alone! A huge number of GED students struggle with this exact issue.

GED Students have a bad habit of mixing up the "rules of math" because they don't realize that there is a big difference between SIMPLIFYING EXPRESSIONS and SOLVING EQUATIONS. These are opposite processes and therefore the rules are completely the opposite. A crucial skill for any student when tackling an algebra problem is the ability to determine, "Am I simplifying?" or "Am I solving?" And students who don't get this continue to make mistake after mistake on algebra problems without ever being quite sure why.

I finally passed my GED! Your program has helped me so much in the past few months, I went from scoring a 130-142 to getting a 156-160. my mom took me out of school in second grade so I never understood math at all, I turned 18 and started working on my GED June 9th 2021, didn’t even know how to divide. Now I’m here a year later 🥰

Sharing this to Facebook. I’ve been seen the “math” on the truck, and it’s bothered me as incorrect.

Thanks!

Hi unrelated to the video but I been studying on the basics of square roots and i ended up learning things like how to find the square root of a decimal number using long division, finding the square root of a fraction with perfect and imperfect squares and lastly how to approximate the square root of a number. Do you know if any of these will not be in the test so I that I can have less things to remember.
also does cube root show up?

YAY!!! OMGOSH THANK YOU MISS KATE! This is most outstanding! Even if this problem would not appear on the GED, it's nice finding multiple solutions to address such an expression even if it is just for fun. It's entertaining and a learning experience all at once. 🧮😁🤘
