Semiconductor is the new oil, and major industrial countries rush to step up capacity and industrial policy.
A US-led multi-country chip ban on advanced semiconductor parts is taking shape as Europe and Japan join forces to contain China. The world may end up in overcapacity in matured nodes if China does not manage to move up the tech ladder. If China manages, two ecosystems may be unavoidable.
In a tough global macroeconomic context for PCs, smartphones and consumer electronics, automotive semiconductors remain one of the rare bright spots for the industry driven by secular, irreversible trends such as electrification and autonomous driving. Europe and the US obviously enjoy strong positionings in that space, but China is not without options.
