Understanding Car Titles (Clean / Salvage / R-Title)

Показать описание
Guest Starring Hank at the end!
In this video I cover the difference between the different forms of titles, that you will find on a vehicle. From clean titles, salvage titles, and the R-title.
Broken down into sections, the very first subject I cover is on, the difference type of title you can put on a car.
1) The Clean Title - This is your typical roadworthy vehicle, assuming the car passes your states required inspection tests, it will be legal to drive in your state.
2) The Salvage Title - A salvage title is given to vehicles that have been totaled by an insurance company. These vehicles can not be insured, and cannot be driven on public roadways.
3) The R-Title (Reconstructed title, rebuilt title) these vehicles start as salvage titles, and someone rebuilds them, they then must be passed through a rigorous inspection to prove they are safe, and road worthy. At this point, (assuming the vehicle passes inspection) the vehicle is titled as rebuilt, and can be insured, registered and driven.
Why do insurance companies total cars? - This depends on the state, in the state of Pennsylvania insurance companies use what they call the "total loss formula, this is the TOTAL amount of repairs, (parts, labor, storage, towing, your rental car, and any other expenses incurred in the repair of the vehicle) + the scrap value of the vehicle. This is the opportunity cost of just outright scrapping the car. If the total loss formula number is greater than or equal to the actual market value of the car. The car will be totaled by an insurance company.
Can I insure a salvage title vehicle?
No.
Can I insure an R-Title vehicle?
Yes! It can get tricky at times though, some insurance companies don't want to touch rebuilt vehicles, because the safety and reliability can vary SO much on a case by case basis. Some companies offer limited coverage, but not full coverage, where some companies will not touch it at all.
Beware of scams, and shady salesman, in all 50 states it is REQUIRED to disclose salvage/rebuilt title status or any major damage the vehicle had sustained!
