The Country With No Official Flag

The Union Jack, the iconic flag of the United Kingdom, has never been officially legislated as the national flag through any act of Parliament. This contrasts with many other nations where the design and status of the national flag are codified in law. The Union Jack's history dates back to 1606, following the union of the crowns of England and Scotland, and its design evolved with the later inclusion of Ireland. Despite its widespread and official use, its status as the national flag is based on tradition and custom rather than legal statute.

Countries like the United States and Canada have explicit laws that define their flags, detailing specifications, usage, and protection under national symbols legislation. In contrast, the Union Jack's legal status remains undefined in statutory terms. Its authority and recognition come from centuries of use and acceptance, symbolizing the union of the constituent countries of the UK.

Even the College of Arms says that in King George's proclamation "any shade of red and blue is acceptable.'" Also that there is no specific arrangement of the 3 crosses so "many different forms of the flag are correct." 😳

Tonga has a law that forbids the flag from ever being changed, and Nepal has a 24-step manual to draw the flag in a very math-y way

Fun fact: US Flag Code doesn't say how the stars should be arranged, just that they need to be on a blue field. So you can arrange the stars in any pattern and it's still legally a US flag.

fun fact: brazil has all the aspects of the flag perfectly determined, except the font of "ordem e progresso" so it can technically be papyrus

There's no standardised welsh dragon. Several different depictions are used in an official capacity, and even drawing a terrible red dragon is sufficient

PLEASE do a series exploring the loopholes in how the flags are described by law, I really want to see the ridiculous designs that still comply with the official definitions
