Introducing the Cowbird

I had never heard of a cowbird before one appeared at my window. After researching there were some things I didn’t like the sound of, like brood parasite. Though when I started thinking about how cowbirds have figured out the foster bird system they are really quite incredible. First they watch other birds build a nest. Wait until they leave the nest alone and lay an egg while unattended. Leave their baby to hatch and fed by its foster bird family. And finally be there for its return to the cowbird family. I can’t help but be amazed. I incorrectly stated the foster bird was a carolina wren but it was actually a chipping sparrow.
