Life is not waiting for the storm to pass,

A spur of the moment trip is just what the boys needed with a touch of fishing to get away from the fasting ;)
A post birthday treat for Suraj, this time round we headed south to Lake Eland.
A venue I have been craving to fish for the last year.
Before we could venture any further we called the venue to enquire, staff member Reece was ever so friendly to assist telephonically and also helped us with some fishing tips .
My spirit was somewhat dampened by the cold front pushing in with 90% rain however fishing has thought me that one should never give up.
We left Ballito around 4:00am, stopped by at Port Shepstone for coffee and reached around 6:50am.
The road to the venue is easily accessible using a normal car however getting to certain areas requires a vehicle with slightly higher clearance (SUV or van)
We were warmly welcomed at the reception by who gave us a brief rundown of the activities and amenities available. There is a well-stocked shop at the reception for any last-minute snacks n treats.
After we paid our entrance fees we decided to venture a little before we could get down to business.
One has the option to do a self-game drive or guided, whilst driving along one can expect to come across wildlife such as eland, buck, wildebeest, impala, blesbok, giraffe, zebra, etc.
The suspension bridge is a must along with other activities.
The bridge is around 80mts across and once you get over your fear of heights it’s quite an achievement. Once across you are somewhat taken back into time, something out of Jurassic park with the magnificence and grandeur of the Oribi Gorge. Rest assured the bridge can hold 70tons, luckily, I didn’t carry my fishing tackle across
The zip line tours which offers extremist a thrilling ride, reaching speeds of up to 160km per hour, also a must whilst visiting NO THANKS!!! I’ll stick to fishing.
There is a scooter tour on the game reserve for a more relaxed vibe whilst taking in nature. The scooter tour is 5km of fun and adventure for the whole family.
Other activities include three designated picnic and braai areas on the reserve, 4x4 hiking/walking trails, horse rides, paint ball and most importantly FISHING
There is also restaurant, licensed bar and tea garden (indoor and outdoor deck), catered by an executive chef. (Please take note of the operating times)
Various accommodation options avail to from camping, fishermen’s cottages, the pipe dream, cottages on the water/edge to a huge family style house.
Oh well let’s get the story going so we can fish.
The temp averaged between 9and 11 degrees for the day with occasional showers throughout the day. This made fishing somewhat unpleasant and tested our patience to the max.
We found a spot and offloaded the bakkie.
Mixed the feed for prep time and whilst Suraj setup, I used the Deeper to map the area.
We got the feeding going with some premixed feed using the Spomb.
Tackle rigged, baits in and it was time for a breaki.
Tin fish Saami’s with extra chilies, onions and dhania
We tried everything we had and it seemed the barbel just couldn’t leave us.
We carried our newly purchased cadac for a lunch special which is now one our must haves for them trips….. spicy sausages with marinated chops and bake beans mixed on the side
We opted to sit with a refreshing glass of coke and take in our surroundings after lunch, I think it was us being stuffed to the brim
One day wonder …
We had the worst possible weather and fished mid front conditions, its often the case when fishing for carp at an unknown venue, for one day and without pre-feeding to somewhat struggle until you get the fish in your area and get going with what they like.
We lost count after 12, the averaged around 1.3kg and below saving us from a blank.
This venue does hold some impressive carp and we will definitely visit this venue again in the warmer months lol.
There are different dams at the venue that one can fish, target species mainly being bass, barbell and.
