The instrument arrangement is amazing! It brings new life to this 19th century art work!

An invaluable gem of a musical creation. An explosive device full of the most beautiful and powerful energy of human emotions and of Spanish character, constantly, all the time tending to wear out, to turn into the sweetest romance, or to literally explode..., until it does. It´s the reflexion expressed in music and in dancing of a most intense and dramatic Love Story - the one between young Rodion and the majestically elegant and talentful youthful ballerina, Maya, ever since they caught the first sight of each other until our days today. And this gave us this marvellous piece of Music and Ballett dance: Carmen-Suite.

Superb opening. Conductor Yuli Turovsky, no longer with the Montreal orchestra, not only understood the music of Bizet but also Spanish culture. I think the fast rhythm and the fiery castanets of the opening must be his interpretation of Shchedrin's Carmen; it goes right to the heart of Hispanic culture; as someone of Russian descent YT had that same passion in him. So beautiful it will live for ever

An interesting transcription of turning music written for an opera into a ballet score. Originally banned by Soviet authorities in 1967, then Shostakovich got all was resolved!!!
Needs to be seen to be fully appreciated.

i wish they wouldn't stutter so dramatically in the Habanera. it's supposed to be a seductive dance not a drunken stagger. other than that i like this rendition very much. thanks for the high quality sound!

Arrangement des plus réussies par Rodion Shchedrin de Camen de Bizet, pour son épouse, Maya Plisetskaya. Comme j'aurais la voir danser sur cette musique !

I love most of this. However, some of the cymbal crashes sound stupid and vulgar. It reminds me of Stravinsky's (?) comment about the harp - it's like finding a hair in your soup.
