I tried your method yesterday. I found it really hard to avoid deforming/distorting the mug body. I suppose I could let it get drier before attaching, but that would mean a huge moister difference between the two parts.

You need to let it dry (ofc), after the amount of time required you immediately need to wash it. There are little clay clumps left in the cup, don’t worry about the outside. It’s optional, once their all out it’s ready.
