He's allowed to move sideways and backward. What did the defense do wrong? Moving his feet doesn't lean into offensive player. Offensive player puts his shoulder into him. As Perkins continues to move sideways, never got beat on this play.

If you start at 0:13 and go frame by frame there is a point where the ballhandler takes off from his left foot and both feet are in the air. At this point the ballhandler is initiating contact with the defender but is in front of the defender's chest. The defender keeps moving due to momentum of his last step and gets in front while contact is still happening. To me this is a no call because the first time contact happens (if the defender could magically freeze in space) the offensive player would pass with minimal force to the defender. This is still a PCF because the offensive player extends his arm after the contact but not because of the initial contact. Neither player could react to the scenario prior to the contact. But honestly, it is fair to call it either way as long as the ref is consistently calling it one way or the other.

Why are players not driving around players these days. They just straight up charges at defender to bump them out of position.

Player-control. The Gonzaga player established legal guarding position and then moved obliquely with the BYU opponent, before the contact was made. Movement from a defender after LGP is established (unless moving forward) is legal.

In this situation, if the bump happens to the chest as it did, it's a charge. If the bump happens to the defender's left shoulder, it's a block.

Upon 2nd and 3rd review, it looks like he gained LGP and maintained it, offensive player brought the contact to the torso... charge.

I see a little arm push there, but contact was initiated by defense, it does look like offensive to me, with doubt on the flop!

Play on. Defender in legal guarding position but offensive player’s push off not egregious enough to warrant a charge. Offensive players have to be allowed some leeway to create separation from defenders.
