Avid Studio for iPad - Tutorial & Review

Avid just released its new video editing software for the iPad. This is a review and tutorial on how to use the program.
In my opinion this video editing program blows Apple's iMovie out of the water. There are so many more features and ways to customize your videos.
For only $4.99 in the app store you can't go wrong.
Avid Studio for the iPad does have a slightly bigger learning curve than iMovie, but once you play with it for a while it's very easy to use.
If you enjoy editing your videos and making movies, do yourself a favour and download Avid Studio for your iPad.

Great review / tutorial, I've been using a combination of Splice, iMovie & reeldirector but Avid now does the lot.

I have got an App to transfer footage between my iPhone4s, Touch & iPad 2 but not with me. I'll look it up and repost. It's very handy so I can video on one & edit on another without going via PC iTunes or iCloud.

Anyway top tutorial/review, thanks a lot

I know, I know.
I'm just so used to it and forget when I'm doing a review. It's something I'm really trying to correct. Thanks for the heads up.

nicely done and thanks for the quick tutorial. I just picked up the app today. I already had to reinstall because the scrub/play feature just refused to work (no, I'm not using it on an ipad1, I have an ipad2). Seems to be working as advertised. Not being able to access all of my vids on my ipad was frustrating. So glad Avid fixes this really dumb problem. Now, if only ipad would let me use him as a camera monitor! that would be so useful to filmmakers. Thanks gain.

I just found a work around for this...so the answer is yes you can crop. Basically you need to pull the clip down to the timeline and then pull the clip on top of itself for a second time and select Picture in Picture. Now you can zoom into the photo or video cropping or repositioning your image. I call that an instant crop with a little work around and it works great!!! I hope that this helps!

Instead of trying to transfer your iphone video to your ipad through the computer you can get an app called Photo Transfer. You just have to be connected to the same wifi to do it and it is actually really handy.

You may wanna consider picking up the iPad Camera Connection kit. You can import your pics and video from your iPhone 4S (or any other camera) straight to your iPad. Bypassing your computer completely.

@erpatt That is a great tip...I have one and it is so easy for me to transfer everything and then start editing with Avid Studio on my iPad.

You can play two clips at the same time in a Picture in Picture effect. Have a video in the storyboard and drag a second clip over the top and release over the first clip in the storyboard area. One of the options is Picture in Picture! In the current version, there is no black and white or slow-mo option.

Ah just checked and it's PhotoSync, you can transfer via WiFi / Bluetooth directly from one device to another. Perfect for filming on one & edit on another. Cheers, Tim (UK)

Hi, I have the Avid Studio app from April 2012 and love it. I like how I can add music to the timeline where I need music as opposed to iMovie putting the music track across the entire timeline, which is not useful. However, in Avid Studio app, is it possible to add a lower third on a video file? So far, I can only add a text slide before or after the video, not on the video. Thank you for your time.

i like this app, its pretty decent. Id love it if it had some kinda of video adjustment feature.
Either some presets, like bleach bypass, or just something with Saturation, contrast, lightness etc, just some basic color grading. Maybe be able to lock footage in the layer so it wont slide. And be able to add markers in audio tracks at least. That wound be all I need. Great app

You can lower or raise the volume of any video clip (with audio) by double tapping the clip in the timeline or storyboard. Your tools will open and you will see a volume level slider. You will also notice that there is an option for Audio Fade In and Audio Fade Out!

Anthony

Recently Avid just released version 1.1 of Avid Studio for the iPad and there is a microphone icon that will let you record voiceovers. This feature does not work with the iPad 1 because of the hardware but this feature will work with any version of iPad 2 and higher. I hope that this information helps!
Cheers,
Anthony
