The recent comment by the Indian Prime Minister's on 'revadi culture' or freebies being dangerous for the development of the country has sparked the debate on freebies culture in India. The freebie culture is not new to Indian politics. Freebies are something that are given out for free. Freebies like free power, water, electronic appliances, cycles etc. are among promises made by political parties.

The Election Commission has explained that freebies was a term open to subjective interpretation and has no precise legal definitions. For instance, during a natural disaster or a pandemic, providing life-saving medicines, food or funds may save lives but in regular times, they can be termed freebies.

Although freebies and welfare schemes conjure up distinct images, one could argue that there is a thin border between the two . The term " freebies culture " emerged in India, where many current and former political parties have been charged with giving out Freebies to win voters .

What is the difference between welfare schemes and freebies??

1. A welfare scheme is one the govt comes out with AFTER they are elected. A freebie is something political parties promise at the time of election to GET power.
