Portrait Painting Tutorial | Start-Finish & Zorn Palette

This week's portrait painting video is a more comprehensive Start-Finish demo with more painting footage than my previous videos. I utilized the Zorn Limited Palette. It is an oil on 12x12" panel, and the entire painting took about 4 hours.

You amaze me in how you make sense of a bunch of paint and transform it onto something so spectacular. I would love to paint but it would take a century for me to learn to do what you do. Thank you for all your amazing videos.

Forgot to mention...I was fascinated with your "drawing brush and your eraser brush" method.  I am familiar with the wipe out method to establish large shapes but somehow it never occurred to me to "erase" smaller shapes with the brush.  Insightful and thanks for sharing.

I am *amazed at the range of colours from the Zorn palette!* I truly appreciated the different camera angles, music and your commentary throughout. Very well done! And a big *thank-you* for telling us that this took you 4 hrs + lunch!
I learned a great deal from watching you mix your paints and how you moved your brushes and their description. Nice to know I don't have to spend a fortune since I was given some new brushes from Michaels and didn't really know whether to spend money on "the proper tools".
I have been watching videos for half the day and night and yours was the best by FAR!. Thanks for answering questions in your comment section too—that is rare. From Toronto ☮

A very fine artist sharing an extremely valuable step by step explanation of Zorn's palette and an effective method to lay out the mixes.  The best explanation of procedure I have seen.  Very impressed with Yupari's calm demeanor, his skill and the respectful way he answers questions on this site.  A credit to  art appreciators and to artist.  Thank you very much.

Anders Zorn is from my home town Mora. I have been to his house and museum many times (the house is part of the museum). He was a brilliant painter. He is like the local celebrity for our town, haha!
Didn't know there was such a things as a "Zorn Palette" though.
He had a great saying which is "tvivlar man på egen förmåga skapar man ej stora ting"
Basically "Doubting your own abilities you will not create great things"
I have it framed in my studio. Thank you for a great video! I will subscribe 🙏😊

I was fascinated to learn about the Zorn palette. I discovered I had an aptitude for portrait painting, which was a total surprise, 2 1/2 years ago. Every body was astonished, especially me and my art teacher! So thank you for your videos/tutorials. They are a great help to this student. Henry Bedingfeld (in the UK).

I am forever astounded as to how much colour can be had from such a limited palette. Great painting demonstration. Loved to see you work. Very relaxing.

Really liked the tip about the highlight of the eye. I think my next project will be a Zorn master copy. That palette has captured my imagination.

Vatican approved colors, earth tones . I remember reading years ago they considered certain colors were responsible for effecting people negatively.
From what I remember about the article I read, but I have always loved the Vatican's art collection so I adopted it just based on its esthetic impact
in relation to nature pre 17th cen. That painting came out great my friend, I usually let it dry then glaze, but I like the energy of the continued flow of alla prima and I can see more color play develop in real time .
