This video is just a rambly video where I run through why what Luke Smith says about Lisp is wrong...

Before you ask no I wasn't wearing a shirt.

The essay by Paul Graham I said was called "Why Lisp" is actually this:

I love how he makes a small remark about Lisp during a Livestream and you made a 30+ page presentation of why he is wrong.

I’ve recently downloaded SBCL and going through Practical Common Lisp by Siebel - the experience has provided a new insight into bottom-up programming. I love LISP

It’s a curse that people feel like they have to have an opinion about anything and everything when asked. It’s okay to say “I don’t know enough about it yet” and move on!

I'm pretty sure he hasn't even written a single lisp expression.

Lisp can be very fast, but parts of the community around it (le Hacker News reader for example) uphold silly standards like making every function recursive, never bothering to add types, etc. This style can bring Lisp down to Python-tier in terms of speed. Maybe this is the source of Luke's confusion.

That guy sure had a lot of strong opinions about matters of which he has no knowledge at all. At all. Absurd

i used to like luke's content. nowadays its only about dictating what he likes, and throwing shit at everyone else

the fact that youve made a 46 page presentation about this is so good haha

Luke smith spent several minutes demonstrating that he does not have any credibility to speak about the strength of various languages. His comments that he knew about Rust while not knowing anything was telling. Thanks for quoting the guy so I never waste any time listening to him drone on.

Speedwhise, he thinks Rust is "comparable" to go LOL

I use OCaml (a traditionally academic language) on a day to day basis to solve all sorts of problems. I used to write Common Lisp and Clojure. What is he talking about?

Thanks for this video. While performances cannot be easily compared from a language to another, it is important to remember that LISP is in no way in the same ballpark than Python, but more in the range of 1 to 5 times the speed of C.

Same thing for Haskell, even if for this language it means to learn a bit more about the inner works of the compiler.

My 2 questions: Who is Luke Smith? What is Lindy?

I've never heard the term "lindy" before. What's it mean?

Lisp, Forth, Perl, C, shell script, Modula2, assembly is what I used mostly over 30 years. But I like Rust, Closure, Scheme & Python(but hate the whitespace rules) and play with some of the other languages

Agree c isn't always faster, look at x11 that's pretty bad performance over the udp network. Great presentation and content.

luke smith is such a sad case of someone becoming a character they made up

Somehow I miss what Luke is trying to say?

everyone in the comments hating on luke. The man is on a livestream answering a question "what is your opinion on rust". He admits he doesn't know much and still gives his thoughts because he's asked, and his answer in still interesting even if its wrong. this makes it so that the livestream is interesting and engaging. He does sometimes say "i don't know enough about ___ to give my opinion" but if he did that for every question it would be a very boring livestream
