Review: Sony STRDH590 4k HDR AV Receiver With Home Screen Bug

While this Sony sounds great, and for under $250 it should be awesome, the menu system is a problem.

Sony might be able to fix this with a firmware update in the future, but in the meantime, the Home screen on HDMI switch for users of HDMI Arc, and HDMI CEC makes this reciever a non starter.

Why has this video got so much dislikes..? I bought my Sony STR 790 AV receiver a few years back, and here I am, still looking for a hack to get rid of this sh*tty home screen bug. I wish I saw this video before buying it.

i have my receiver running all my devices, i use the ps4 to do netflix/youtube - this is a non-issue

The remote has direct buttons for the receiver inputs, so most of the time you don't have to go through the home screen, to switch to tv from game system, just hit the input for the cable box, or tv direct, or Blu-ray. Works most of the time. My problem is my Visio Smart cast won't "SEE" the receiver when you first turn it on, unless you reboot the TV, but I don't think it's a problem with the SONY. Home Theater has gotten so complex and interactive it's not surprising that there are a few glitches at times. I hope that Yamaha works out for you. I considered one when I upgraded to a DH790, but my wife would have had to learn a new system, and she was already checked out on the Sony, so 790 it was. Over all satisfied with both. Great sound and quality for the price, now I just need to get some better speakers for it. Good luck!

I fixed this issue by turning off HDMI-CEC on my display. Once I did that it didn't pop up with the menu.

Mine doesn’t do anything that you’re talking about I just turned the TV on and It turns on without me even pressing a bottom

how has no one fixed this major issue yet. you seem to have it better than I do however. when i get the menu to pop up, it dosent go away, it just re appears again.the only way i found to get rid of it is to turn off HDMI control on the AVR. this sucks however as now I have to use 3 remotes instead of 1... very annoying and being a cheap person, hard to find anything better for a decent price (especially when i got mine on sale for $50 at walmart)

Almost all the Sonys have that home screen. I use the remote to switch over and it goes right to it.

Still having issues with XBOX1X and Sony DH590... I changed the AMP Menu to "Enhanced" but it fried my XBOX1X HDR output completely (would go to no tv signal at all)... hard reset the TV (TCL 55 635) and the XBOX1X.. and was able to fix it by swapping the HDMI cable after still having no signal hooked up to a PC monitor. Right now running the XBOX1X back to the TV the old way and using the optical cable connection for audio with the Sony STR DH590. I am afraid of trying to run the XBOX1X back through the Sony receiver. I think I will get new HDMI cables and try again...

Was just about to order one until I saw this video. Does this problem still exist? I have a Samsung Qled tv and often switch between Netflix app and PS5 or Xbox. I would then get this message every time I switch between them?

So, if I have no need for HDMI ARC (I have AppleTV and never use my TV's "smart" capabilities) then this failing will essentially be non-issue for me, right?

I have the same receiver and dont have that issue. Have you checked all the settings or tried the help on thier websight. It expains a lot more than the damn instructions that come with it.

Anyone know how to get large speakers to have some decent low end. Trying to set on up for the parents, the sony reciever replaced an old teac that the radio was starting to go on fm and was gone on am. This song doesn't drive the speaker anywhere near what the 30 year teac did.

The issue with mine is that when I use the Apple TV4K, It doesn’t by pass 4:4:4. It glitches the screen. But when I plug it straight to my tv, works totally fine

wow that is painful sony fix that bs. I may have to switch from Yamaha rxv483 to pioneer, can't stand how you cant blackout led screen completely of Yamaha, distracting for movie time, especially when tv and avr are at eye level. hope you make a full recovery!

Not a issue on mine but i pair with a sony tv it recognized. Only problem i have is hdr pass through doesnt work even though box said it should.
