Build Up in the 1-3-4-3 Formation

Build-up in the 1-3-4-3 can begin with two different structures. The first sees the back three and goalkeeper create a diamond. The central defender can act as a pivot or reduce the opposition striker’s pressing ability. Creating passing lanes into midfield. The team may use an asymmetric back three. With a centre-back taking up a position similar to a full-back in a back four. This allows the team to establish numerical superiority on one side, but does telegraph how the team will begin. Moving forward the 3-2 shape created within the formation can overload the opposition’s forward line. Along with the box midfield creating a numerical advantage in central areas. Both make progressing forward easier.
