I'm from Europe and having used cassette toilets I think you need to use it the right way, the chemicals are for breaking down the waste and keeping it smelling fresh. Also just buy RV toilet roll, it literally dissolves in the chemicals. Using public toilets to empty isn't an issue because with the contents broken down by the chemicals, the contents don't block up the toilet your using for disposal, as it's all liquid it goes out no different to flushing the toilet. Me and my partner certainly didn't need to empty it every 24 hours as one person has suggested. And we didn't have to allow for a full blank tanks weight if you have a huge on board tank. I wouldn't use anything else, but everybody has their own preferences. But a review on it being used as designed would have been better . Still love your channel though 😊

I feel like the whole point of having a dedicated toilet in your rig is so you can drop a deuce in relative comfort. If a cassette is only good as a big fancy piss jug, I can't imagine it being a good solution for most vanlifers.

It beats the heck out of the 8-track toilet!

Thanks for the great video! Just wanted to let you guys know that your content is still helping strangers like me!

Eating something that didn't agree with you or getting a bug and the cassette toilet or even composting one would be useless.
I don't know, I'm not sold. spending all that money on an RV and still needing to use public restrooms or digging holes just doesn't seem right. Power to you for being able to do it.

If you go #2 outside when boondocking, why don't you go #1 outside too? Going #1 outside is a lot easier than #2.

Hi! I‘m from Germany and have the same cassette in my RV.
I do not use it only for urine. If outside temperatures are high, I have to dump it every second day. For In-the-middle-of-nowhere situations we have a second cassette for change. I use chemicals, therefore I only use dumping stations, which you find very often in most parts of Europe.
Thanks for your videos! Keep going and take care!

Thank you for this very well-made video with clear explanations and suggestions! My husband and I just closed the deal on a Hymer Aktiv today and he knew how nervous I am about having to deal with black water, so he shared this with me a couple of nights ago. Can't say I am looking forward to the chore, but you guys sure made it sound tolerable! Looking forward to watching your other videos and learn more about everything that comes with our new camper van!

Do not be disheartened by all the caustic comments seen below. Many seem to have missed the entire point of this episode and locked onto one single aspect that is nothing more than a personal preference. I am beginning to better understand why so many major YouTube creators are disabling their comments. Thanks for the video.

Well, I just spent two weeks RVing in Europe and all I can say is I do not like the cassette toilet. Two people using the toilet normally will fill up that thing every 24 hours, and we even used public restrooms from time to time. That added an extra layer of stress to our travel when that dreaded red light came on and we couldn't find a dump facility. While in theory you can empty it in a regular toilet, you are dumping 3.75 gallons at once, which a regular toilet is not designed to handle. The only reason they use cassette toilets in Europe is because there is no such thing as full hookups and their RVs are small, so it is a good compromise. It is the way things are done over there, so we had to adapt, and in the end it wasn't too bad. While in the USA, I'll stick to my 25 gallon black tank that can last us almost a week... but to each its own. One of the main reasons I like RVing is that I can poop in peace, in my own clean toilet. By the way, this is just my opinion, I know many people who swear by them.

Hi both. There are not only blackwater tanks and cassette toilets. A composting toilet would solve most of the problems: no bad smelling, no energy consumption, no chemical treatment, no waste of water. Its a very clean solution and dumping is so easy. We are using a Kildwick composting toilet in our expedition vehicle and a very very happy with this solution.

Very cool how honest you guys were. I really like my black tank, I hate using public toilets.

I also don’t like dealing with items like this so often. Get enough of those items to maintain and you’re schedule will be full dealing with them.

Thanks you answer all my question for the cassette. It's more informative than other videos that I have watched. Others just go over it with out giving that much explanation, and I'm left with more questions.

Guys the green elsan fluid is bio friendly, can be used in sceptic tank systems and you only need that, it serves As tank and flush, it breaks waste down and really doesn’t smell when emptied, because it’s already doing its job and broken the waste down, also dose not as chemically strong as the traditional blue and red fluids, so one fluid also means less cost. In the UK and Europe nearly all campers, motorhomes and Caravans have used this system for decades, even the portable thetford porta potti Range which can be used in tents boats or anywhere (there are even frames for elderly or low mobility people to use in a bedroom) I think only the US and Canada build with mostly black tanks, also only use elsan toilet paper and you will be fine, use normal toilet paper and you’re asking for problems and probably for the camp ground back waste disposal system as it causes blockages in both, the vent button makes emptying very quick, in Europe the emptying points are designed to minimise splashback, in a lot of posh Campsites are service points we are starting to see special automated emptying and cleaning machines for a small charge (they look a bit like a vending machine) for a completely hands free experience

I have a twenty-seven foot Jayco travel trailer with traditional three tank system, black, gray, and fresh water. I only put #1 liquid in the black tank. I usually find a campground washroom, outhouse, public washroom, or a portable washroom to do #2. My wife would not do that and put #2 in the black tank, but since she passed away, it has been liquids only. Even when she was here, it was only her contribution of #2 in the black tank. That made it a lot easier to dump and keep from being odiferous. Way back when the kids were young, we had popup campers using a port-a-potty. With that, I would empty it daily, but we didn’t boondock. I can see how it would be much more convenient to have a cassette toilet when boondocking. Breaking camp to dump a black water tank is not my favorite thing to do.

Speeding this video to 1.75 was the perfect pace for me. Great info

only using it for number 1 makes it useless, I will more than willingly find a dump station for a proper (and big) black tank. This is for weekenders really and you guys are a rare exception.

Cassette toilets are the norm in Europe and they are for both liquids and solids, the biodegradable chemicals used in them break down the solids and eliminate any smell. All campsites have a place to empty them and it takes just a few minutes.

Most campsite will allow you to empty your cassette even if you aren’t staying there, sometimes for a small fee. Plus you can just empty them down a normal toilet pan.

I'm glad they figured out how to never have to do #2 anymore.

My first camper had a cassette toilet in it... given I wasn't in it for more than a few days at a time, I used it for everything. With proper chemicals and dissolving TP, it worked great and never smelled up the camper. The new camper has a 30 gallon black tank, which is amazing for an 18' camper.
