Voxel Tycoon - Is it Worthy?

Voxel Tycoon is the latest dopamine distribution experience to fully capture my attention. This business simulation game is one of those games that subdues you into a flow state where time passes quickly and sleep becomes so much less relevant. For me as a player, this says something. While I typically do play the occasional simulation game, I often find their mechanics convoluted and the learning curves too steep for enjoyment. There is an underlying intuition into all of the mechanics here and a fool proof basic tutorial that gets you at least half way up the mountain before allowing you to wander off on your own.

Voxel Tycoon is a manufacturing, shipping, and materials fabrications game. You play as the owner of a company that seeks to make as much money as possible (like any tycoon game) through the efforts of your business. You start in a small territory with a handful of surrounding towns that require raw materials. At first the game is a shipping and logistics game. The initial goal is to mine out the materials and ship them to customers that need them. As you grow your business, you will need to optomise the shipping routes and diversify using both roads and train rail to get your materials to where they need to go. Towns will also being demanding more complex materials which will require manufacturing facilities in order to fabricate the materials to meet demand.

At some point in this process you will need to expands beyond your initial borders. This will purchasing access to surrounding territories to mine new raw materials and make even more complicated fabricated materials for your existing and new customers. One of the hooks here is that the game theoretically should expand forever. You should always be able to find a new territory and always be able to expand your business in a bigger and more profitable system.

The developer has provided a key for this product.

The game also starts excelling once you start your rail network. Initial game is ok about trucks, but soon distance and volume get you to branch out to trains. Once that happens I generally only use trucks to deliver goods from train stations to the store in a city rather than between cities.

Just subbed :) I hope you make it big on youtube, it's obvious you are putting a lot of effort into these videos. I found your video from your link on your steam review. That was a good idea to include.

Does it make you cut down old growth forest, teaching you bad habits - instead of planting hemp fields?

For me this game strikes a perfect balance of Transport Tycoon, and games like Factorio or Dyson Sphere. It's not all about conveyor belts & factories, but it's not all about transporting goods either. (Although at the start transporting goods is your sole concern.)

The thing that bugged me is that I felt I had trouble keeping up with cities' demand. I got Iron Bars & Wood Planks pop-up in my cities at the same time. I had to spend some money to keep the business afloat while I did the research.

For bulk vehicle actions it's pretty easy. Either you buy a bunch of vehicles, and then go in your fleet management screen and select the ones you just bought and bulk assign them a route you want. Or, and this is my all time favorite QOL improvement they have in this game. Is the ability to clone any existing truck and match it's route. But you can do this from ANYWHERE. From the in-game world, to any menu where you even see just an icon of the truck. This station doesn't have enough trucks going to it? Just click on the station, open any garage and click on the duplicate button and select any of the trucks in the route. Boom. Repeat as many times as you want, and then turn on the trucks.

This is a beautiful review. Well done! I love games like these but it seems like the genre is awfully saturated with different themes/styles of play which makes me jump games. I do however feel this is different & hope the devs come with more features & mechanics that could further increase replay value. Maybe send this to the devs by email & review on steam, that should help them a ton. Thanks pixel.! 😁

This game and Foundation are really good for early access games. I spent hours while creating my mining empire. The early access also lacks of train system tutorial, but there's a lot of them on youtube.

Excellent review! I stumbled across it while looking for a concise review, which is hard as nowadays they all seem to be over an hour long and I do not have that much care or attention span. But this was a perfect length and I feel gave across all the info of a video 5x longer. So thank you for saving me time!

Just found your channel like a week ago and I've been binging your videos. Especially liked your Slormancer and your Crypto Against All Odds Reviews (wishlisted on Steam). Looking forward to your future videos! I also hope you cover more strategy and indie games.
