The tug test is not enough in itself you also have to do a visual to make sure the arm is pulled in and that the latch is latched

40 year trucker here. Listen up Rookie that posted this video. All that BS about lowering the air bags is ridiculous nonsense. I remember when all trucks had leaf springs. The reason the air bag switch is in the truck is for one reason only. Only dump your airbags if your trailer is too low for you to get under it. Back in the day trucks had two main tire sizes.
22.5s and 24.5s. If the last guy that pulled the trailer had 22.5 rubber and your truck has 24.5 rubber you could dump the air out of your bags to lower your truck which made it easier to get under the trailer. Then you could fill your bags back up and be good to go. Nowadays 95% of all long haul trucks have 22.5 rubber so all dropped trailers will be about the same height.
Dumping the air bags while unhooking is not necessary although it won’t hurt anything if you do it. Some truck drivers just come up with the most stupid crap. 😖

One more step. Physically check the fifth wheel connection to the kingpin.

Crank that landing gear till you hear air start pissing out the leveling valve on tractor, release fifth wheel lock disconnect the air lines and electrical lines, pull forward.

I never lowered my air bags unless the trailer was too low.

I had a new yardman hook up my trailer in Baltimore years ago .
He pulled it around and said " Youre all set " .
So I took my little flashlight and stooped down and got underneath so I could see the 5th wheel jaws and could see that they werent locked and the trailer was just barely sitting on the 5th wheel .
I went inside and found the guy and said " Hey come here and check this out " .
I gave him my flashlight and told him to go under and look at the 5th wheel .
To Top it off I had Flammable placards on it .
I never told his boss cause Im pretty sure he learned an Important lesson and wouldnt repeat that mistake again .

My truck doesn't have a air suspension dump valve so I can't dump my air bags. Guess I have to keep messing it up

You should have air bags raised before backing under trailer. Visually check King pin hook is complete before pulling out, engaging Automatic Transmission or Manual Transmission .

Never lower your landing gear to the ground, especially loaded. Leave 1.5-2" of space so that when you drop your suspension and pull out, you won't over shoot the pin when backing back under the trailer. Common sense that more and more new drivers don't seem to have these days.

nice way to damn near do a high hook bud

Tractors have different size rims and tires 22.5 low pros to 24 inch high rubber and it does make a difference. Also lazy truck drivers don't wind the trailer legs down and drop them too low on the legs I have seen it all. Your scenario works in a perfect world.

when hooking up do not forget to connect the air lines and retract the legs on the trailer....

You don't blow the bags this is called hanging the pin and causes undue stress on latch assembly

pariently most of the new truck don't have airbag controll so you can't lower your tail anymore, you have to lower landing gear all the way down and harder.
