You should say to calculate the size of an array whatever the datatype is as follows: dataType a[n][m]; the size is: n * m * sizeof(*a); as you can see **a is the first element in the array (a[0][0]). so whatever the dataType may be you can easily calculate the size in a portable way. as you said size of integer may change from a machine to machine thus calculating the size as i said ensures the correct size. also you can get the number of elements from the whole size: int nElem = sizeof(a) / sizeof(**a);
