You hit on it right there when you mentioned "virtue signalling".

Marketing studies will have told them that people are into sustainability now. However, the idea of a sustainable purchase is kind of an oxymoron. The most sustainable thing to do is buy fewer things / be more organised and sensible about whether you need things ie finish one product before buying the next.

That poses a problem for luxury consumer goods of the kind which made the Kardasians rich. They sure as heck didn't get so rich selling a small group of people 1 product a year. They got rich marketing heavily to make people buy without thinking, out of sense that they had to keep up with an emerging trend... Never mind that the *next* trendy would typically be along in 4 weeks time and the current one forgotten.
