When you apply for any Civil Service job, you will need to complete an online application form that requires you to submit a personal statement. The personal statement will be assessed against the relevant Civil Service success profiles and strengths that are applicable or the role!

SEEING THE BIG PICTURE 03:15
The Civil Service success profile of seeing the big picture requires you to have knowledge of how your job fits in with the public sector mission and objectives.

CHANGING AND IMPROVING 06:05
Whilst working in the Civil Service you must be open to continually changing and improving. If you do not improve your performance at work, or embrace change positively, the Civil Service will not be able to meet its objectives.

MAKING EFFECTIVE DECISIONS 09:14
All members of the Civil Service, regardless of their role, are required to make effective decisions that demonstrate value money and efficiency. When making effective decisions, you must use an evidence-based approach and carefully consider your options, including an assessment of the risk involved and implications posed.

COMMUNICATING AND INFLUENCING 11:47
Another of the Civil Service success profiles and strengths is that of communicating and influencing. Within your chosen civil service job, you must communicate with clarity and purpose and always respect the needs, views and opinions of others.

WORKING TOGETHER 14:07
Teamwork is absolutely vital when working in the Civil Service. Regardless of the position you are applying for, working with others must be demonstrated within your personal statement by way of using the STAR technique – situation, task, action and result. Within your personal statement, demonstrate you can work effectively within 250 words!

LEADERSHIP 24:07
Can you demonstrate pride and passion for delivering service within an organisation? Are you able to value other people’s opinions and ensure your team is diverse in nature so that the expectations and needs of customers are met?

DELIVERING AT PACE 16:27
Again, another one of the success profiles is that of delivering at pace, and we strongly advise you provide a specific example of where you have been able to work quickly and accurately in a previous role when completing your personal statement. Aim to provide evidence of this success profile within your personal statement all within just 250 words!

DEVELOPING SELF AND OTHERS 18:56
Taking responsibility for your own development and the development of others is a vital aspect of all civil Service roles. If you are required to write a personal statement that demonstrates your ability of developing self and others, provide a specific example within 250 words of where you have focused on this important success profile.

MANAGING A QUALITY SERVICE 21:18
The Civil Service has a strong reputation for managing and delivering a quality service. Regardless of the department you are hoping to join within the Civil Service, there is a strong possibility you will be assessed against this important success profile. Again, provide a solid 250-word personal statement that gives evidence of where you have taken control of the delivery of a fantastic service to meet the needs of a customer or a client.

Your videos are great, though only really scratch the surface of Civil Servant recruitment exercises. The examples haven't actually told me what value you added, so lets take in isolation seeing the bigger picture. You havent told me really specifically what you have done, you have told the specific ask, so what was the commercial and financial objective ? What was the end result, do you have a reflection ? What value did you add to the example, so you have told me that you worked hard to understand how your role fits, though you didn't tell me how understanding that added value to the organisation, or your team. I would expect at AO level to EO level, you would be able to tell me how impactful your work is, and specifics around what you did as an individual.

Changing and improving, what did YOU do, how did you apply your learning, and what is your reflection ? You havent in your example hit any of the key points of that competency.

Making Effective decisions, what did you do, how did you decide on the right strategy, what analysis did you use, did you give feedback or receive feedback ? How did you receive feedback, what did you do with that feedback ? Again what specific value did you add. Again at entry level I would expect someone to tell me what they done in this case, not what the team done.

Communicating and Influencing is great, you have told me exactly what you have done, you have shown me that you are able to adapt communication taking into consideration peoples needs and showing understanding.

Etc etc, these behaviours are very generic, but great for someone that isnt familiar on how to apply for roles in the Civil Service. But you do need to look more in detail when applying for roles, otherwise, nothing makes you stand out.

Hope this helps at least 1 person.

Grade 7 Civil Servant (5 years) and have done many many recruitment exercises.

Really useful video, thanks! I am trying to apply for a comms job in the civil service with a 750 word limit on the personal statement, but as well as the bevaiors you also have to address the essential skills in the personal statement. Do you try to fit examples of the essential skills to a bevhaior? I'm struggling to see how this can be fit into 750 words!

Thanks for the excellent content Richard. How would you recommend approaching a 1250 word personal statement that is in addition to a number of success profile competencies?

Hi Richard, based on your feedback about personal statements, I got an interview with the civil service although, I didn't get the position this time. The feedback I got on my personal statement was that it was the best they have ever seen. So thank you.

Hey Richard,

I am loving these helpful videos. I wanted to ask a question as I am quite confused.

I have a 750 word personal statement to write and submit but I am confused about the criteria. It states this:

Your 750-word personal statement needs to demonstrate how you meet the essential criteria. You may wish to include examples of how you tackled similar tasks or demonstrated the skills/behaviour outlined below:

• Previous experience and use of IT systems such as Microsoft Office to complete tasks.
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to build customer relations
• Analyse and use a range of relevant, credible information from internal and external sources to support decisions.

So do I focus my whole 750 words on this or also add success profiles points?

Thank you, have a lovely day and week!

Hmmm currently trying to do this by fitting the four behaviours they listed in 500 words. So each behaviour must be half of those listed here at 125 words, gonna try my best. Edit - Saying that they ask for:-
Making Effective Decisions
Delivering at Pace
Managing a Quality Service
Working Together
So i could probably combine them all together maybe, lets see.

Great video however I found that the examples used are for competency answers as opposed to the 500 word personal statement that is at the start of some applications. The personal statements are the ones used alongside a CV and the competency questions.

Thank you very very much for this video Richard. I'm honestly very thankful and grateful of you to put these really helpful videos out there for people like myself to benefit from. Is there any possible chance that I can get in touch with you to discuss a job interview that I have? Kind regards in advance and do look forward to hearing back from you if possible.

Applying for a Civil Service job over this weekend that has a closing date in 4 days time... I was struggling to work out how to write a Personal Statement, which was frustrating as I have all the experience necessary for the new role...

Hopefully, this great advice will get me over the line!! Thanks Richard 🙂

Hi Richard, thank you for the wealth of information you have made available, the guides are a great resource and have helped a great deal. I have subscribed and have liked all the watched references. My question relates to the Personal Statement (PS). I am applying for what would be a dream job and have prepared the five behaviour elements of the application in both 500 and 250 words as I am unsure what count will be required. For the PS, should I include additional examples for each? I have found conflicting information and am unsure how best to prepare. Should I relate it to the responsibilities of the job or as per your video in this link?
Many thanks in advance

Hi Richard brilliant video. I have 750 words to do which needs to include a personal statement and thr behaviour changing and improving. Is it best to give a shorter example with the personal statement and then give a longer example for the behaviour? Many thanks

Richard, great video, thanks. However, you go through personal statements here rather than competency behaviour examples which are normally required for Civil Service jobs in up to 250 words. As you know, these are in the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) format, whereby the Action element should take the majority of text. Do you have any videos for Competency Statements? Personal statements are a slightly different thing, usually instead of competencies or in addition to those, from my observations.
