I was always very perplexed by these moves when I played pokemon mystery dungeon blue rescue team, and then learning that they were very hard to obtain. I feel better knowing they kind of course correct in explorers but these ones are so strange

despite these moves being typeless, skitty's line is able to get the same type attack bonus, thanks to normalize. this turns wide slash into a strong and relatively accurate multi-targetting move. vacuum cut, on the otherhand, will still deal set damage. but, interestingly, this set damage is *still* increased by STAB. whereas the move would normally deal 18 damage flat, it deals 27 damage. if you manage to somehow get vacuum cut early, this makes it a pretty deadly move for those earlier dungeons.

another somewhat related fun fact: normalize affects everything that the game counts as a "move." this includes the basic attack that every pokemon has by pressing A, as well as thrown sticks, spikes, and thorns. so skitty/delcatty effectively get a 1.5x powerboost to their basic attacks and those aforementioned stick variants.

come to think of it, this might make an interesting short, though obviously that's not up to my discretion.

"These moves really aren't all that great"

Well, Wide Slash has one very good use- I used it as my main move for farming Kelceons to recruit them in EoS.

Wide slash is a must use. Very good mass control if you don't have access to Thunderbolt or room attacks.
It even hits ghosts inside walls.

It's funny how busted these games are too.

Like in the main series bullet seed is whatever but then in Mystery dungeon it becomes one of the best moves to use.

I remember the Ominous Wind and Heat Wave spam in larger rooms. I adore these games and I miss them every day.

Wide Slash is extremely useful as a move, mostly since it's one of the few physical moves that could attack a pokemon that was around a corner

Wide slash is a perfectly serviceable move especially when considering just how lacking area of effect options are physically. The only moves that are better for physical mons that can “hit muliple targets” are ranged multi hits like rock blast bullet seed or spike cannon but that’s not really meant for dealing with crowds you can just be extra pp efficient that way and maybe handle monster houses you walked into by heading back into the hallway and firing into the monster house room that way. Vacuum cut on the other hand

Wide Slash and Vacuum Cut could've been great additions to Generation 5 as normal type moves that could hit every opponent simultaneously in triple battles.

Can we acknowledge the 30-foot iron snake that is Steelix in the party?

I used the wideslash move a lot on a playthrough because it felt so balanced. It really feels like a type of move that should have been very common in the game yet is unique. And it worked well on my Blastoise

Never underestimate the power of being able to hit three tiles in front of you. lol

I actually remember having a playthrough of sky where I utilized wide slash for the majority of the game and it was actually really good just because of its area of effect and the fact nothing resisted it

When these two moves were linked it was great for clearing an area around yourself when cornered

I guess my brain had been associating vaccum cut and vaccum wave as the same move for years. It's been a long time since I played Mystery Dungeon.

Vacuum cut was the only reason I was able to beat luxray in explorers of time, I found it on the ground and was able to teach it to a tauros that joined my team on the same floor.

hey man, I've used vacuum cut quite a bit, and wide slash is (at least was) one of my favorite moves for its ability to hit multiple things in front of me, as well as those diagonal hit options

I remember as a kid learning about Vacuum Cut and being like "what the heck is this"

They are actually pretty useful in certain situations. Getting tag teamed by enemies? Or have an enemy around the corner? Use wide slash. (Or just standard attack to make them move closer on their turn). Stumbled into a room with several enemies you are entirely unprepared or the wrong type to fight at once? Vacuums Cut may have your back. While they aren’t powerful on their own in a traditional sense, they can be very useful if you use them properly. I can’t even begin to describe the number of times vacuum cut saved me from being overrun by enemies I was weak to. Because in open spaces, by the time the hostiles actually come close enough to hit me, I’ve already softened them up at the very least. And in monster houses? It can genuinely help you thin the crowd sometimes.
