I remember an earlier post where you talked about the perception of mulch as rubbish and it's obviously a hard perception to shift. Here's hoping things go forward with Emanuel as you hope and that having more time on the farm will reap dividends for you.

Thanks for the feedback Danou. Makes sense. Yes that issue with culture change is a difficult one to crack. Most of Southern Africa is up in flames like that now with big smog covering the subcontinent. It will take a few willing and brave pioneers to change those ancient methods. Once a few are established then others will start to see the benefits. It will take a while :(

It must be so hard to see all the mulching go up in smoke like that. I imagine the women receive unbearable peer pressure about how "dirty" their homes are. It made me try to think of a solution. What do you think of creating tree skirts made out of salvaged materials like cardboard? They could be painted decoratively and would be smooth and clean looking, hiding all that mulch underneath. I'm imagining something like a "Christmas tree skirt", those are made of fabric for indoors. But perhaps the women could show being house-proud by having the prettiest tree skirts in the township. Might even be a fun contest: who can display the most beautiful and stylish mulch covers.

Mulch case is a cultural problem, which makes it difficult.
People are mostly shaped during childhood. They can still change some views between 15-25, but later in life we are 99.9% set in stone, closed, whether it's farming practices, profession, religion, or political views.

Wow, burning the mulch. She wouldn’t be my wife after the first time. At some point you have to look around and see what everyone is doing in your culture is wrong just based off the results.
