Burma Mines Railway, Railtruck to Namtu, Myanmar

The 2ft narrow gauge Burma Mines Railway provides a public service with converted Hino Lorries from Wallah Gorge to Namtu in the Shan state, Myanmar / Burma. On its journey from the mine to the city the train runs around the famous spiral.

My mother is from Burma. They left the country the night there was a military coup back in the very early 1970s. They were lucky because they were high up so they knew what was going to happen. They left everything behind and had to start again in Australia. My grandfather was lucky enough to know people here and was given a job. They were the few lucky ones who could afford to leave. Whenever my mother tells me the story she always sais "you could hear the tanks rolling down the streets that night." It's something that probably terrified her. Thank God for a country like Australia.

This is officially one of the coolest looking rail vehicles I've seen. I love this sort of effective ingenuity that you see in the third world, splicing together scrap metal, antiquated vehicles, and industrial machinery into reasonably functional creations.
