From 5G to 6G. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

I study PhD at The University of Surrey and the topic of my research is Intelligent Reflective Surfaces (IRS) | Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) for mm-wave communications. In this video I provide a brief overview of problems that my research aims to resolve, and later we go to the campus and I show you my place of work!

The fact that many small loudspeakers put together gives the possibility of controlling the environment has been existed for some time, so how come no one has thought of it by making an analogy also with the propagation of signals from antennas? this sort of control can also be obtained using many antennas placed side by side rather than RIS, so i can't get the new thing by using the RIS? is it just a "promotting" product that companies trying to justify it is existence in order to sell ?
