I watched this video and five minutes later I told the contractor currently doing some repairs to my 1941 home in Detroit that I want ball bearing hinges on the new door he will install. I had never heard of those hinges before today but I am about to find out thanks to what I learned from you.

YES!!!! You are awesome. I've been waiting for a video like this for FOREVER. past two years I've been looking for thorough video on components of doors and the nuances of installation types. Thank you!!!!

I found a few but nothing regarding the "South" where HVAC/insulation/moisture control are different! 💪🙌

At Home Depot we are using REEB millwork who can get Simpson doors and therma tru, emtek, Edura etc. I really like working with REEB as they are definitely our most high functioning supplier that I am familiar with outside of Andersen Windows. The other being masonite, jeldwen and feather river are just sort of the typical big box variety in the end.

Over 25 years ago I installed a piece of plastic & wood fiber board (decking) to replace the front door threshold that was badly rotted out. The North side windows never saw the sun so the window sill bottoms were also replaced with the same material. I have moved twice since then and the threshold is still there & intact. I would use wood fiber and plastic boards for all exposed surfaces. Choose the right color & never have to paint again.

Most suppliers offer this and quite a few offer the bottom 8 inches made this exact way. Much better for doors with no roof over the door.

Would love to hear you talk about out swung exterior doors. From what I understand they are better than in swung in many aspects, we just aren’t used to them in the US.

Hi Matt, Here in the UK most if not all external doors are UVP and although it is not susceptible to water damage they are horrible and very low end made. I have yet to find anyone making solid doors that are not going to wick up water and to top it all off most people forget to paint the top and bottom of the doors as they are out of sight.

Great show Matt. Is there a company you recommend especially for exterior doors? I live in a hurricane zone (the Bahamas) and looking for something, possibly aluminum or metal. Thanks, and great work on the videos!

My home has those Hinges that I ordered and installed in 2012. All the caps fall off and the pins then will drop out. The hinges worked fine but those metal caps are a pain.

After living in an old house, with a front door that operates cleanly about twelve days a year, I'm warming to the idea of COMMERCIAL steel doors, that come pre-installed in steel jams. I can "skin" the outside if I have to have it look like wood.

I see the entire methodology of building a modern home as antiquated. Bit by bit, over time, people found what works a little better than what was done before, but rarely have you questioned the most basic of assumptions. Layer by layer you build, every trade doing their bit, ignoring the burdens, inefficiencies and failings that are left to the eventual owner. Exercise - blank paper, forget what you know, design a house. Love your channel, keep up the good work.

This is great timing. I need to replace a set of rotted out, exterior double doors on our house before I can build a deck. Do you know anyone in the Bay area who is familiar with these products? Thanks. .
