During the college football game between UC Davis and Montana State, UC Davis converted an extremely unlikely fake punt by running for a gain of 24 yards on 4th and 23. The Aggies took back to back penalties before the fake, making it even more surprising.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a team take back to back penalties before trying fake punt lol

this is one of those plays where if it works, you celebrate the genius they have as a coach.

but if it doesn't work, you question the stupidity of the head coach.

This is actually a pretty ingenious call. Even if you don't get the first down, you still are likely to get about 10 yards and the opponent gets the ball back on their own 30. Punting would give you a minimal benefit.

Dan Hawkins is a great small-school coach. He had great success at Willamette and Boise. Nice to see him come home to Davis, where he was a player when I was just a young lad.

What a gutsy call right there.

Right before the fake punt, I was telling my friend (who doesn't really know football) that they were taking the penalties so that they could put MSU inside their own 10 yard line, then they did this, every person in the stands couldn't believe it. Those penalties made it so the MSU punt return team knew that they wouldn't have a fake punt. Crazy game until the 4th

Somehow makes more sense than Hackett's offense in Denver

This actually isn't a terrible idea. Montana State isn't going to expect a fake on 4th and 23, because nobody would. The ball is in MSU territory, so worst case scenario you get a solid chunk of yardage and only end up sacrificing 10-15 yards of field position if you don't convert.

That's some serious 5D Chess there, taking two penalties to get more room and then rolling with the direct snap fake that *NOBODY* saw coming

Absolutely brilliant

That was one of the best set ups I’ve seen and I’ve been watching football for 44 years. Insane call. Guts!!

This play doesn't happen without that push by the rest of the team at the back end there

I was in the stands for this game and we were all just standing there befuddled at what we had witnessed

The two deliberate penalties set the trap! Brilliant psychological warfare!

Good job by U.C. Davis at the end by pushing the defensive players back instead of pushing the runner (which is illegal).

I would maybe do a delay of game once but not twice for a fake punt 💯

The commentator “ he did that on purpose” 1800 steps ahead of everybody

See the genius there was that after taking the delay of game and false start, Davis knew a fake was the last thing Montana State would expect. So even though it was far away, he still was able to get pretty much to the line of gain before anyone touched him. Nicely done.

wow that was just impressive. I like it how the whole team just comes & shoes the whole pile forward like five yards 😅😅
