In this video, I introduce my new prehistoric-looking pet, set up its tank, and go over everything it needs to thrive. Watch as this little beast explores its new home, learns to hunt, and shows off its ancient instincts. I just got a baby snapping turtle, and it feels like I brought home a real-life dinosaur!

Fun Fact: alligator snapping turtles can reach max size a 80 cm. and can weigh up to 85 kg. Well that means it can big as the size of a small refrigerator.

Hatched two of these when i was really young. Dunno where my stepdad got the eggs but i remember them fondly. After they got to a little bigger than the one in the video, they would hang off my earlobes (with my hand under them of course) and cling to my finger. Never once drew blood on me, but would draw blood on anyone else who handled them. Once they got to a certain size we turned them over to a wildlife sanctuary to care for.

I have a juvenile common snapping turtle I've had since January of last year, her names tatertot and she's really sweet. I'm 14 and love reptiles. She's a rescue too, so wildcaught.

Be careful what fish you feed to the turtle. Minnows and goldfish contain thiamese which is a toxic compound

Good intentions BUT half of this set up is wrong...the substrate is ok but snapping turtles do not like deep water and its relative to their size. In the wild snapping turtles just like to stick up their neck to get air. So the water level for him should be about 2 inches. Why do you think he was resting on top of the filter?? He was stressed tired of climbing to get air. Two...Snappers dont need basking spots and from my experience not a lot of UV light these are mid dwellers with their shell covered in mud and moss...trust me he will be happy with two inches of water (adding an inch as he grows) and good hinding material....that's it...

Dino is an awesome name for this little guy. If you get another turtle, please consider naming it Gamora! :D

Ive had one for 11 years since it was that size. His shell is around 18-20” now. Never been bit once, but be prepared to make it a new environment about once a year. Ive had to make about a dozen different enclosures. Current one is 300gallon rubbermade tub with land around it. Roughly 8feet x 8feet. Love my buddy though!

Get a pet shark. What about a basking shark? Get some more plants for him. Also, mosquito fish are livebearers and related to guppies. You should farm them, then you have more.

How can a baby prehistoric amphibious reptile be so cute?!? I'm sure my perceptions have been warped due to my early love of all things Gamera. Please let us know if Dino ever spouts jet flames from his shell and starts flying around the room like a UFO!

I reckon Dino's gonna develop one veracious appetite for the chase. Can't wait to see him hunt down bigger prey! 😉
