Episode 1: Join Jane Park and Physical Therapist Joe Krugh from St. Joe's for some tips on starting your first 5K.
Hi, I'm Jane and this is your Wellness Moment.
So you've decided to get off the couch and run your first 5K. Good for you! Today I have Joe Krugh, physical therapist, to help get us started. Hi Joe!
- Hello, Jane!
- Now I know you're an avid runner, what advice do you have for
someone who's just starting out and they want to make
this first 5K memorable?
- I see a lot of patients that are coming in with running injuries, most all are pushing too hard too soon.
I recommend walk/running programs so you should be able to start out with being able to walk at least those three miles.
And then you would break it up into chunks. If you do five minutes, you would run for one minute and then walk for four, and then repeat that for your thirty minutes or your three miles, however long it took you.
- And are these schedules available somewhere?
- Well, there's a lot of them on-line but we will also have one on our web site.
- Great! Now Joe, I know running doesn't require a lot of
equipment, but would you recommend investing in a good pair of running shoes?
- Yeah, a good pair of running shoes are very important. What they'll do is prevent injuries, so good support and good fit. And if you're unsure about the fit, then you can visit. The other key thing is that it's great to work and train with another person.
So if you find a friend that's also wanting to do a 5K, call them
up and train together.
- Well I'll be your friend!
- Great! Come on, friend!
